Colonial Beach crushes West Point

I have a feeling 4 Northern Neck District teams will (or should be anyway) in the State Top Ten in the next poll.

W&L 5-0
Northumberland 4-0 (play a tough one in Richmond tomorrow)
Essex 4-1 (beat 3A TJ tonight, lost to Sussex)
Colonial Beach 3-2 (lost in OT to Sussex and a close one to a 3A)

Congrats!

Thanks stubbie46. I am glad that it was a battle going into the 4th. Have not read any details yet.

I hope West Point does well in the District! I know you guys want KW. May get em this year.

I don't mean to keep harping on the unfairness of the regions (A and B), okay maybe I do lol...

Even if you include Region B's top teams, Riverheads and WC, who have 10-0 records combined ...

The top 4 NND teams have more wins than the entire Region B combined, by like 3 games or so.

So you are saying you like the previous playoff format to determine the "East" representative? I can't say that I disagree because I liked it better. I don't think there is a perfect system and unfortunately there maybe years in this system that the regional championship game is the best two teams in any given division. It's certainly an entertaining debate every time it changes.

Yes, I agree with you. The previous playoff format is superior to this new one. It is not just bad for football, it blows for all sports.

Also, not at all blaming Riverheads. They have to play the hand they were dealt, not their doing.

The last few years playoff system was awesome. The Top 12 (or 16) teams from the East region made the playoffs. Placement in the seedings (1 seed to 12) was determined by complex ratings.

The only complaint about that was when it was 16 teams, too many bad teams made the playoffs. The East region fixed that by only allowing the top 12 to get in.

Also, the criss cross of the final four was perfect. The West top two were matched up v the East top two.

This year I think that the best four football teams in all of 1A are from the old East region. Some may say that is biased, maybe, but I am fairly sure that it is a correct assessment.

The only game in the playoffs that will challenge the Big Red is when they play the winner of Region A - and the fact that it will be at Region A gives Region A a better chance of winning.

I understand what you are saying I remember back in 2004 franklin and Sussex were the two best teams in the state and they met in the regional championship game that year had the rules been changed back then to last years pairings they would have play for the title instead of franklin crushing JI Burton I think Babb had over 400+ yards rushing in that game it was a waste of time and money for me. Once the attendance goes down at the title game this year maybe they will change it back.

I like the new format. Winning your region should mean something and now does. Rotating semi-final pairings will keep the championship matchup interesting.

I am not a fan, except they have added more teams than the previous version of this format.

First, the way the region's are divided only leaves 2 teams with a chance in Region B, and would have been 1 last year. Yes, nobody was competing with Riverheads in 1A, but none of the teams were good in Region B. It's is also really strange to me how William Campbell is in Region with Riverheads, yet Parry McCluer is closer and not.

Instead of 1A, let's use a different classification. In 4a, there could possibly be 4 teams in B with a excellent chance to win a title, with all 4 possibly being undefeated. That is a STACKED region. They could possibly be the 4 best teams in state, yet only 1 can be in top 4. In my opinion, the championship game should be the best 2 teams, or at least the 2 teams who took care of business in playoffs.

Let's go back to 1a and Region B. Everyone seems to be under the impression Riverheads is the best team. And what if William Campbell is 2nd best, and they are the only team capable of keeping it close with the red team. Or last year, the 2nd best team in 1a played RH in championship game, they can't this year. Or even the fact that most on here that knows about 1a (not me) says Region D doesn't have a real contender, they have a representative that has a better chance to win a championship than a team who could be 40 points better than them.

But even with all that, it's still an improvement than the previous version of this system where there were regularly teams missing playoffs at 9-1 and 8-2. I can remember seeing a 9-1 team missing the playoffs after losing the last game of season to team who finished 10-0, and maybe even won championship that year, while in a different region a 4-6 team got in

Gunz, I have read your post a couple of times and I am still not sure which side you are on, lol. I just don't like the current system since there is a possibility in any year of the two best teams meeting before the championship. Not that the previous system wasn't flawed but it seemed to be better than this.

Not this systrm. I liked the last system more. My point was this is better than the last time we had 4 regions, where there was a long period of time only 4 got in in each region, this is an improvement over that, but not over the 16/12 East west in past several years

the main gripe about the system used the past 6 years or so was the insane travel some schools had to experience for regional play. I, too, supported the cross-over idea for the semifinals, but even some of that travel was insane.

There is no system that will put the two best teams in the championship consistently. Whether seeding and bracketing by region, half state, or statewide, there's no way to ensure that the two best teams meet in the championship. Currently, the seeding is based on VHSL power points, but how accurate are they? They're better than some nonsense coaches' or media poll, but they aren't perfect. Plus, the system can be gamed to a certain degree by coaches and ADs.

I personally would like to see a return to automatic qualifiers for district champs. Win your district, win your region, make it to state. If the second best team in the state happens to be in the same district as the best team in the state, that's a tough break. It won't and shouldn't happen now because our districts are such a mess. Gunz is right about an expanded field of playoff teams. That's something we can all agree has been good for the game.

I certainly don't see it being good now with district champion being an automatic qualifier. You have districts with 3 classes between them. And then you do have districts in the state that just aren't good. If i remember correctly, 1st it was 4 per region, then it went to 6 and 8. When it was 6 and 8, the district winners were the higher seeded teams. And the game i am remembering of 9-1 Not making it was Harrisonburg-Lee. Both came in at 9-0 Harrisonburg was AA Div 4 and Robert E Lee was AA Div 3. Harrisonburg won the game, and because Lee lost that last game (if I remember correctly it was a tight game, Harrisonburg went deep or won state) and didn't win district, they were sitting at home, when teams that weren't nearly as good were dancing.

No there is no perfect system, and you may not have 2 best teams play every year, but with the last system you had a better chance of it. If the top 2 teams were both East, they still had chance to play each other with cross bracketing.

Remember it's STATE champion, not where you live in state champion. Not meant to offend anyone, but look at it this way. Everyone is on the Riverheads best team train, and maybe Riverheads is MUCH better than my Cougars, but either game last 2 years could have gone either way. For sake of argument, say the 4 best teams in the state are Riverheads, William Campbell, AltaVista, and Sussex Central. 1st game vs Altavista (Win that game 21-14), 2nd game vs William Cambell (win that game 24-21), 3rd game semifinal vs Sussex Central ( win that game 28-27), then plays George Wythe in championship game and wind 56-7. It would seem to me that any of the 1st 3 opponents deserved to be in championship more. My point is the last system we had before this one gave teams who would deserve it the opportunity more, not just where you live or which region you are placed in.

Again, this isn't to say that those are the best teams, that would be the scores and opponents, and those are the deserving teams and nobody else deserves it, just in my opinion the quality of team and resume and results should determine everything, not just where you live.
