Yes, agreed Champ Cage.

Auburn High School does an excellent job indeed with all of its sports programs.

Also, they have been a volleyball powerhouse for some time now as well. I went out there to Auburn about two years ago to watch the Rappahannock Raiders play volleyball in big tournament held there. Well run show by their AD and his athletic crew out there (which is way west to me in far eastern Virginia).

Good folks out that way as well.

I would guess that recently Auburn and Rappahannock (Warsaw) have the most state titles and state final four appearances in the overall sports category (unless I am forgetting someone).

Now the Rappahannock Raiders appear this season to have a legit state title contender in football as well.

Of course, Riverheads has a lot of state titles and final four appearances as well across the sports board. It is my understanding that Riverheads may be soon returning to 1A after a brief hiatus competing up in the 2A world.

Is that correct?

yes

Guess enrollment numbers back 474. Imagine that. I was in Richmond about month ago. On way back to East Tennessee I drove through that part of the county. Looks like a lot of development happening from that end of the county. Don’t know what the school zones look like but I was impressed with Stuarts Draft and Greenville area.

LOL

Hope Altavista, Rappahannock, and Essex are all good next year. Galax and George Wythe improving it could be very interesting next year with Riverheads returning to 1A. Luray is also moving down and Westmoreland is moving up.

I could be mistaken but I'm fairly sure that Washington and Lee (now Westmoreland) will remain in 1A next season etc. Their ADM numbers are in the mid-300s unless it has changed recently.

If W&L (Westmoreland) is supposed to move up to 2A maybe they need to check with ole Riverheads on how to remain (or return) to 1A....

Westmoreland already has to fight to be competitive in basically all of the sports in the 6 school old Northern Neck District (all 1A schools) as it is.

Westmoreland was already listed in the release last month as moving up to Class 2. They're going by enrollment from grades 9-11 now. According to that, Westmoreland has 369 students in grades 9-11. I'm not sure of the exact cut off number, but Luray is moving to class 2 and they have 343 students, while Riverheads is dropping down to class 1, and they have 337 students.

Thanks for the correction, kwhs95fan!

I had glanced at the documents that I thought said were the alignment plans until 2026-27. I see now that they recently released a new mid-cycle region plan as you mentioned.

Dang, tough outcome for the W&L Eagles (or Westmoreland County High)....Good luck to them.

With the new AD at Westmoreland taking over the basketball program and the return of Coach Yates for football Coach Sudduth is still with the soccer program those 3 sports are well covered. Girls softball, volleyball and basketball are on the upswing the track cross country and baseball teams have coaches less then a year in so see how they do in their second full season. School won’t light up the trophy case once out of districts considering how tough 2A is but will be competitive. Coach Lacy,Yates and Sudduth have coached in larger classifications so they know what it takes to compete. I imagine it will be like it was last time when Westmoreland got moved up to 2A couple years in 2A then back to 1A.

Well said, RetiredGoalie10!

Westmoreland will do just fine as you mentioned. I just think that the Eagles belong in 1A and in the post season v other Neck and old Tidewater teams.

I certainly meant no disrespect to Westmoreland (old Washington & Lee!). I was just thinking of how much fun and competitive the Northern Neck battles over the years have been for all the teams in the various sports and so on.

I remember all the wars back in the day (like with W&L AD/Football Coach Malcolm Lewis, Essex's Todd Jones (still there, of course), Rapp AD Coach Ken Blackley, King William with Coach Roger Brookes in the district/region etc. and so on).

Back in the old Group A days, heck, the kids fought so hard and cared so much about winning their local NND/Region A titles, that it was often challenging to get the boys (and girls) to care once they had defeated their heated rivals for local titles (of course, many state titles in various sports were earned on occasion) ha.

Now teams are seeded after the regular season and just go straight to the regions (however, the Neck often still holds the NND tournaments for the local trophy but the huge significance is no longer there).

Of course, it is easier with 6 classifications to advance further in states without having to go through many of the 2A teams. So pros and cons I suppose.

Would prefer Westmoreland to stay in 1A as well but rules are rules. Will definitely be a challenge especially in a region that has 16 or 17 schools in it. Be interesting if they went to Region B get some of that mountain air.

so would you say Westmoreland is a football school, a basketball school or an Olympic sports school

Would say the talent between sports has fluctuated over the years. Think 2021 or 22 the football team won district championship. Basketball went to state finals in 2022 boys soccer was district champs 22 23 Region runner up in 21 and 23 and state finalist in 23. Several track individuals have won states in their events.
