In today's Richmond Times-Dispatch - I am having my 1st cup of coffee, I always start with the sports section.

The paper is discussing the monster battle tonight of high school powerhouses - 804 v 757. Highland Springs v Oscar Smith.

They list the biggest local games in the last 7 years.

They also rank the top 10 most successful High School Football Programs in all classes in the entire state of Virginia in the last 5 years or so.

Riverheads is # 3 on that significant list.

Respect.

Top 5 Virginia Programs (2014-2018)

1- Highland Springs
2- Westfield
3- Riverheads
4- Lafayette
5- Oscar Smith

I know many folks are angered by Riverhead's success. As I have said many times, not me.

Congrats! it is great that a Class 1 program can be included in this most prestigious list.

One day, the Neck will take you down :).

What were the other 5? I'm very surprised not to see Salem or Appomattox since they both won 3 straight championships, whereas Lafayette didn't win that I am aware of

I think lists like this tend to miss a few but is really only a conversation piece. I trust the metrics much more and they tell you that most of these are there but those couple of others are there as well. Good debatable topic though.

The real issue is sample size, with only a four year period. Going by decade or more gives you an idea of the true sustainability of a program. A phenomenal class or athlete comes through and you have a great 2-3 years with an additional bump of participation from fence riders and the numbers skew. I wouldn’t remove anyone from this list but there are a couple that are right there as well.

Thanks for posting this @uvacavs1.

Would be nice to see records of these 5 and the other teams that have mentioned over the last 10 years

Sorry Gunz, we took the dog down to the river for a run/swim. Lots of folks about which is great.

I see that NNDman answered your question (s). Thanks NNDman. I was wondering about Dinwiddie too.

Yes, the rankings are based on wins-losses (winning percentages).

State titles and how many or not each program owns broke the ties.

Thanks guys it’s hard to be consistently good over a period of time in high school football with players changing every year so really you got to break it down coaching and the kids buying in to the coach

We have a very interesting match up in the Neck in about a month.

2A Buckingham is coming to play at Northumberland (maybe 1st meeting?)

Buckingham just defeated the #8 Top Ten team on this list, Appomattox, by 21 points.

Good work by NHS AD Rock and Coach Lewis adding Buckingham to the schedule - right before Neck play begins with - guess who? - powerhouse Essex.

NHS QB Mason Adams is the real deal. Plus, NHS has a freshman this season---I'll just say, daaang.....

Should be an entertaining one.....

I did not realize that Glenvar had that good a record over the past five years. That makes last night's win even more impressive.

Do you have a link for this? I'd say it's interesting read. I dunno how much state titles count in that ranking. Union would be right on the cusp if titles aren't the major decider as Bears went 55-10 in same time frame.
