The Cosby Titans got a terrific pitching performance from Hunter Williams on a bitterly cold afternoon to defeat L. C. Bird in a Dominion District game. Williams kept the Skyhawks at bay all afternoon, allowing just three hits in six innings. The Cosby ace impressively struck out 11 batters, including an inning-ending strikeout with Bird threatening in the second . His Skyhawk counterpart, Austin Gammon, actually pitched well himself, despite allowing six runs in six innings. He struck out four and surrendered eight hits, but a couple of errors did some major damage: Only two of those half-dozen runs were earned.

Six different Titans had one RBI apiece, including Tyler Fitzgerland, Keenan Caldwell, Ryan Hall, A. J. Nicely, H. J. Ellis, and Dominic Vacca. Ellis was 2-for-4, while Hall finished 3-for-4 including a solo shot that gave Cosby a 1-0 lead. He also scored four runs. On the Skyhawk side, Adam Bondurant was 1-for-3 and drove in Bird's run via a seventh-inning ground-out. Darius Gillus and Bryce Harman collected the other two hits for Bird.

Cosby broke the game open in the fourth and never looked back. Up 1-0 already after the Hall homer in the second, Cosby had two men on with one out when an error prevented Bird from getting a second (and possibly third) out. Instead, the Titans now had the bases loaded with still just one out. Ellis then singled, scoring Hall. Vacca followed that with a sacrifice fly that scored another unearned run. Finally, Fitzgerald drove in the third run of the inning with an infield single to short. Rather than a 1-0, or, at worst, 2-0 deficit, it was suddenly 4-0. Williams snuffed out another potential Bird rally in the bottom of the fourth (first and third with one out) via a nice pick-off move to first and a subsequent ground-out. That fourth inning was the turning point.

The victory improves Cosby to 1-0 in the Dominion, 1-1 overall. Bird falls to 1-2, 1-2 after a brutal schedule that saw the Skyhawks play James River and Cosby on back-to-back days. Both teams should be formidable as the year progresses. Click HERE for HIGHLIGHTS of this game!
