Dan River baseball edges Appomattox County in conference semis

From GoDanRiver.com

Dan River avoided playing extra innings thanks to game-winning single by Bradley Tickle in bottom of the seventh inning during the Wildcats 4-3 win over Appomattox County in Wednesday's Courthouse Con-ference semifinal in Ringgold on Monday.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the fifth, the Wildcats quickly squandered their lead and allowed Appomattox to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Tickle ended the game with a walk-off hit, giving Dan River a berth in next week's Group 2A West Region tour-nament as well as Friday's conference championship game.

Wesley Thornton picked up the win for Dan River. He struck out eight, walked two and hit one batter over the course of seven innings of work.

Dan River will host Randolph-Henry at 6 p.m. Friday with the conference title on the line.

My own game wrapup:

Dan River and Appomattox Co. left it all on the field tonight. In the end, the Wildcats would win in dramatic fashion as senior Bradley Tickle's walkoff single scored Dallas Smithers to give them a 4-3 victory. The Wildcats did not register a hit until Smithers' single to lead off the 4th. DR would score three runs in the 5th on a RBI single by Jacob Stewart and a 2-RBI single by Smithers. The Raiders would rally in the top of the 6th as Appomattox scored three runs to tie the game at 6. But the Cardiac 'Cats had an answer in the bottom of the 7th as Smithers was walked, Wesley Thornton reach base, and Zach Harris was also walked. With the bases loaded, senior Bradley Tickle hit a grounder into the gap as Smithers scored to end the game.

Thornton got the win as he gave up 3 runs (1 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP, and 8 K's in 7 innings. The Wildcats were credited with only five hits as Smithers was 2-3 with 2 RBIs, Stewart had a RBI single, Justin Moser had a single and a run, and Tickle had the walk-off single. Ryan Dalton was walked twice and scored a run, while Jamie Layne reached on an error and scored a run.

Zack Perkins got the loss for the Raiders and he also had one the Raiders' six hits. Kendall Blankenship went 2-4, Chandler Harvey had a single and two RBIs, Grant Paulette had a single and a game-tying sacrifice fly, and Trey Hamlett had a single in the first inning, but was thrown out returning to first base by catcher Dallas Smithers.

Re: Courthouse Conference Semifinals - Chatham vs. Randolph-Henry

Looks as if Chatham should have saved some of the 34 runs scored Monday for Wednesday.
