RINGGOLD - A second-quarter scoring run lifted Dan River to the Conference 37 boys basketball championship with a 41-32 win over Buckingham on Saturday.
The Wildcats (20-3) went on a 14-0 run over a span four minutes before Bradley Gough got the Knights (13-13) on the board a little before halftime. An 11-point cushion at the break was just what Dan River needed. The Knights converted on just two field goal attempts in the period and trailed 23-12 at the half.
"We knew Buckingham was going to come in here and give us their best shot," Dan River head coach Kenny Murphy said. "We just had to make sure we stayed hard at it on defense. We just have to get better at taking care of the ball."
For Buckingham, head coach Russ Gowin saw that cold streak as the difference-maker for his team.
"We were fortunate that we outscored them 20-18 in the second half," he said. "But that second quarter they had some guys step up there and make some big plays. They're a smart basketball team, and they're very athletic. But I'm proud of the way we played. Our young kids hung in there."
The third quarter saw Kaseem Harris take over for the Wildcats on offense. He scored six points and had a role in a play at the end of the quarter that brought the fans to their feet as Tremaine Edmunds slammed down an emphatic dunk with a few seconds left.
Dan River had a considerable size advantage over Buckingham, and Murphy said the plan was to play into that.
"We wanted to attack with the big guys given our size, especially with Tremaine," he said. "We tried to get him the ball as much as we could in the low block. Playing our size and making people play our style of basketball and adjusting to the things we wanted to do is what we wanted."
In the fourth quarter, Buckingham got to within nine points thanks to a 3-pointer from Tariq Gough and strong inside play from the Knights' leading scorer, Leon Ragland. But the Wildcats were able to dominate the defensive glass and secure rebounds and also kill the clock with their passing on offense.
Ragland led Buckingham with 14 points. He had three rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
"Leon has been great for us all year long," Gowin said. "He was questionable until late last night about being able to play, but he fought through it and play. Without him we would have really been hurting. But he gave some great effort."
Gough added nine points and grabbed three boards for the Knights.
Edmunds finished with 11 points and had 11 rebounds for a double-double. He also had two assists. Harris chipped in 10 points and had four rebounds for the Wildcats.
Dan River hosts Glenvar in the first round of the 2A West Region tournament on Monday at 6 p.m. Murphy already knows what needs to be done for the defending state champions to advance.
"We have to continue to play half-court basketball defensively," he said. "More importantly we have to limit our turnovers, get offensive rebounds and play good defense."
Buckingham travels to Martinsville for their first-round regional matchup on Monday. The time for that game is to be announced. Two top-ranked opponents wasn't exactly what Gowin had in mind, but he's optimistic his players will come with everything they have.
"We know that's a big challenge," "When you have two great teams like that in the conference final and in the first round of the region, it's tough. But it just runs in cycles, and they're in a good cycle right now."
