Dinwiddie 57 Hanover 18

Last night the Dinwiddie Generals avenged two last season losses to the Hanover Hawks in a resounding way with a 57-18 well rounded win. After, fumbling the initial snap (recovered by Hanover) and allowing a score, the Generals took control of the game and never looked back. Both the offense and defense produced scores and once again played turnover free football. Clayton Cheatham did his best to keep Hanover in the game (317 yards of total offense); however, the well designed defensive game plan established by the coaches kept the remainder of the Hanover offense in check all night.

The best part of the whole game was the surprised establishment of the Dinwiddie running game against a very physical Hanover defense. Both teams play a form of the spread and Dinwiddie is known for its quick tempo, pass/run system. Not on this night. Bryce Witt only attempted 9 passes (4-9, 50 yards, 1 td, 0 int's.). The Generals opted instead to take a page out of Hanover's book and ran the ball with authority using counters and stretch plays (283 yards rushing). Dinwiddie's rushing attack was led by Sturdivant (18 carries for 172 and 3 tds), Tyree (4 carries for 54 yards and 2 td's) and Freeman (3 carries 40 yards).

On paper, the stats look similar, but reality is quite different. The Dinwiddie defense produced four turnovers and hurried Cheatham all night. Keeping Hanover from establishing the ground game and forcing the Hawks into unfamiliar territory was the key to success. One side note of importance for Dinwiddie: Two games, 0 turnovers. I like this pattern.

Two very convincing wins over two traditional powers. Its just week two. Plenty of work still to be done.

Player of the game: Tye Freeland (40 yards rushing, one int., five pass breakups and 8 tackles).

Next game: Friday, Home vs. Caroline

I would give the game ball to the men in the trenches. Awesome job by the OL/DL. Just like the old saying they don't get the spotlight as the skilled players but they defined this game. The DL gave heavy pressure all night and the OL made massive holes. Good job young men.

Great Job Generals. It's not often that Hanover gets handled like this.

I would like to apologize to dinwiddieproud for not having faith.. Haha.. i will do better with the pickem this week.

One correction Navy. One turnover. That initial snap from center last night that never got past the big center's thigh. I can live with that one. I'm guessing it slipped in his hand when he went to hike it?

I wouldn't be surprised if that one-handed catch by Pope shows up on ESPN. For those of you who may not know this, Pope made it on ESPN two seasons ago when he hurdled a would be tackler. Last night's catch was just as spectacular. All we could see from the stands was this huge hand come up from what looked like a Rugby scrum, and that hands snatches the ball out of mid-air like a shortstop catching a line drive.

I reiterate what Navy said about Clayton Cheatham. He is one hell of a competitor. A rare beast with the heart of a lion. He makes our win that much sweeter. You can't be considered a championship contender unless you beat the best.

Clayton has earned my respect as one of the best. He put his team on his back and left nothing on the field. It was just our night, last night. Again, to win a game over a competitor like him is special. And that is meant to be nothing but a complement to him.

FYI, I highly recommend Giovanni's. About a mile south of Hanover HS on 301.

And a special shout out to DanvilleSportsHead. We had the pleasure of sitting with him at the game. My crazy family sat near us, and he never once tried run away. Shook his head a few times, but never tried to sneak away.

Question. How the heck to you post a picture from your iPad gallery to this thread???

My pleasure! Had a blast! You and Bleeding are going to turn me into a Dinwiddie fan :D

I know I get accused of hyping my squad up, but the same thing is happening here. I decided to not make the trip to this game for a few reasons, one being how poorly Hanover did in the preseason, and their injuries. Besides Cheatham, they're just not good. They hadn't scored a touchdown all preseason, against a good Hermitage team but also against an average Godwin. Godwin "beat" Hanover 33-3 last week, and Godwin lost to Henrico 37-6 last night. I'll be a believer in Dinwiddie when they get to the meat of their schedule against the good teams. JM and Hanover just aren't what they have been. Hopewell, Matoaca, MBK, and maybe Dale (I think they're average this year) should test Dinwiddie much better than JM or Hanover did. Dinwiddie was able to run on Hanover that well because Hanover's defense is that bad. Hanover lost too much talent from last year's team, including the Patrick brothers (now at JMU) and most of their lines and defense.

Would like to se that catch but the link doesn't work.

The Dinwiddie offense is good. Very good. But as the season progresses, teams will find holding up the Dinwiddie defense is like trying to carry water with a colander. This is what will make them a great team in 2016.

Hoos, I dont think anyone from Dinwiddie is hyping our team. DP and I both gave Cheatham a ton of credit and did not insinuate we would win even our next game. I even said it was "only game two. Long way to go".

The reason we are so elated is simply history. They have been our playoff nemesis for years.

Dont fret you can be the center of attention next week. I will make sure to remind you of these remarks if the Lions beat Courtland this season. Dont even think about saying a word after this post.

Let me get this straight we congradulate the Lions on a last second victory over a young Sherando team and you diminish a Dinwiddie win over Hanover. Wow, and you call Hamspear bi-polar. Louisa is a very good team, but they are not the only team on the planet. Quit being such a narcissist.

You also said, "statement made". If it was last year's Hanover, yes it would've been a heck of a statement. I didn't mention Louisa, nor was I even thinking about them when I wrote the post, nor did I ever ask for any fake congratulations. Just because you guys have an emotional connection to hamspear, don't assume I was just posting to look for attention. Wow.

Please stop. He is just a kid. We were all there once.

But in his defense this year, Louisa will win the JD this season. Frankly, they may go 10 - 0. He has every reason for optimism. The combination of Bell and Whalen is more than difficult to stop. It's like trying to stop a tandem of Jerome bettisses. Certainly above anything the JD has to currently offer. But they do need to fix 8 fumbles in 1 game. That won't fly in the long run. Every team still has work to do but for Louisa to lose the JD this year, they must blow it. Bottom line. Best to the Lions. I have friends there and I really want it to happen for them.

They will almost certainly defeat Courtland next week and by a large number. My Cougars have scored 3 points in two games. Who could pick them? I'm sure no sane individual would gloat over that and think their team are world beaters.

I respect you Shanti and you know I dont pick fights. Hoos is no kid and yes Louisa is very good. He knows where I am coming from. Love his passion and told him so in person. I dont lie or talk out of both sides of my mouth. Remember what I said last week. Dont know if we are good or the teams we are playing are down. Just win and work towards next week. Thanks for the insight though. Nice feedback from a seasoned veteran.
