I heard that all Dogwood district schools are playing one other district opponent 2 times this season, to make up loss of Nelson County. This is not smart scheduling. Gretna will play Altavista 2 times. By playing "down" it will hurt Gretna in VHSL points deal. Sure it may help the Gate Receipts, but gate receipts doesn't help get into playoffs.
If my math is correct Gretna will play at least 4 games vs 1A schools. other schools are probably in same boat.

The only Dogwood team schedule I could find was Chatham. That one has the Cavaliers playing Cumberland in place of Nelson Co. It's tough to try to find a replacement team for the middle to late part of the season on short notice. So I could see how that may have to play out the way you described.
The bigger problem for Gretna is coaching staff/community relations. Gretna has big expectations and expects excellence, and the last few seasons have not lived up to the standard. The town support is there, but wins are a must or the pressure will continue to build for the coaches.

I believe Nelson County was still under contract for this season with other Dogwood schools, but maybe district schools do not sign contracts to play other district schools.

The upcoming season is the start of a new two year cycle of schedules, that is part of Nelson's timing in making the switch to independent. Nelson was originally on Cumberland's schedule, so Chatham did the smart thing in getting Cumberland to fill the vacant slot. Other Dogwood schools should have tried to get in touch with Nelson's non-district opponents to see if they could fill a spot there.

Dogwood district just is in a precarious position it seems a lot of times to be fighting for the same OOD teams. A natural fit for several is to bounce over to the JRD but with every team over there playing an 8 game schedule in district now, only 2 slots open for OOD and some are taken away because of the weeks they fall on. I think that was probably the biggest issue in Nelson leaving is that was a slot that a lot of Dogwood teams already had penciled in for a Dogwood game and now, suddenly, you are asking them to schedule someone else in the middle of their district schedule. Look at where Cumberland had to fit in for Chatham....smack in between Dan River and AltaVista where both were fortunate an October 20 date was open. There are some other teams, I am interested to hear of when their schedule is out in terms of OOD opponents, for example, William Campbell will have to fill 1) Nelson's game 2) Buckingham's game (Buckingham is playing Cumberland again as they have joined the JRD back as a fulltime member.....and since Buckingham is on Chatham and Appomattox's schedules that means the Generals are out of luck) 3) I don't know about this one, just an assumption, but I wonder if they kept Van WV on their schedule or if that was a 3rd game to have to fill? They are not as fortunate as the Pittsylvania County Schools who have an automatic 1 game OOD filled every season (Tunstall)....same with Appo who plays Buckingham automatically every year. I know AltaVista generally plays Rustburg or atleast has recently so they get 1 filled.....but that leaves William Campbell searching for 5 OOD games to play with the loss of Nelson and no automatic rivalries to pencil in that are OOD matchups. Solution? Not sure, one could go out of state, but risk what Chatham and Dan River have suffered in years past when playing Bartlett Yancey (Chatham beat BY in '13 but did not get credit because BY got the opportunity not to claim it and thus cost a 6-4 CHS team what could have been their 3rd playoff birth in school history) (Dan River had to deal with BY scheduling them in the last cycle and then forfeiting or cancelling....not really sure what the deal was there). Or if you land your out of state opponent.....you could have to travel and play on a Saturday in Van, WV.......just some thoughts on why teams are having issues....and I guess my sympathies towards William Campbell's AD for not having an easy road to tow there.

The complete schedules for the Dogwood are not posted on this website yet. But there is some information available.

After you go to the web sight, select a team. Click on the arrow on the bar on the left side of the page. That opens the menu. Click on "view schedules". Sometimes you have to click twice to get it to open. Scroll down and click on "varsity football" which puts a check in the little box. Then click "view".

When you scroll down through the various sports looking for varsity football, if it doesn't appear, there probably has been no information posted to the website yet concerning the topic.

This works for virtually all districts. The program they use is rSchool. Some schools are quick and thorough with their post. Others..., not so much. But it is a good resource.

It's never a good idea to play out of state, unless it's good program you are playing and good VHSL points are involved. Some schools look for cupcakes to play without any travel. It's good to play good teams on the road. It prepares you for playoffs better than playing some cupcake in backyard. For years Gretna would play anyone, anywhere. Heck we dropped Brookville, which was a good program with strong fan base. Probably picked up some D1/D2 school that will bring 12 fans with them when they come to Gretna.

I know Appomattox is still looking for a 9th game. Nelson is out and Amherst doesn't want to play us again.
They can't seem to fill the spot.

I have heard Dan River plays Bassett and Halifax Co in place of B.Y. and Nelson Co. this upcoming season.
Very solid schedule for the Catz. Assuming they beat both Bassett (4a) and Halifax (5a) they should be in position to contend for a top 5 seed in 2a west. I didn't realize they were bringing back as much as they are for this upcoming season.

Still have 9 games and I guess we are looking at Fork Union for a 10th. That will hurt us in points though since I don't think we get points for them.

Yep, Oct 27. The trip down 460 is easy. 460 for all but the last 10 miles. 5 miles of so on I 85 to I 95, then a couple of miles to CH. About a mile off of I 95.

CH has a nice facility. And pretty darn good concessions. Adaquate close parking.

You will not get points from them so you will divide your total points by 9 games instead of 10. It shouldn't hurt your point total.

That is what I found out yesterday.

Thanks for the info!!!

I dont think the AD give the best efforts in filling that schedule out. I like the dude, but I think he can be a little more proactive with that football and basketball scheduling. Dont know much about the other sports at Appo.

Yea, not getting 10 games isn't the best.

Many times the AD meets with the HC (in all sports) to get an idea of teams who they would like to play of the out-of-district games. The AD will take that list and begin trying to schedule games. Sometimes it's easy and other times it is difficult to make the schedule work.

This is every year though?????

Call me crazy but I doubt their are a lot of D4-D2 sized schools lining up to play Appomattox after the past two seasons. It makes it a lot harder to find games without having to drive a loooong way to do it. Nelson dropping them made it even more difficult.

Every year???? Basketball and football schedules were not a top priority. Like i said, i like the guy though.

Outside of Seminole District, a lot of schools don't do a very good job with schedules. Too many try to find "easy" games, close to home. With the point system the way it is, schools should play toughest schedules possible. D2 schools probably have it the toughest, in that often times they play a lot of D1 schools, ( and bad D1 schools at that).
