In the midst of the more attention-driving game of Salem/Amherst, Heritage snuck in and beat Lake Taylor 35-21. Heritage was 5-7 last year and LT beat them 54-0.

Will be interesting to see how both programs respond.

In fact, a lot of traditionally good programs went down tonight. Oscar Smith, 6A powerhouse, got decimated by De Matha(private schools are a risky business). Northside got creamed, CD Hylton went down, James Monroe, Magna Vista, Essex, and others.

But that's life in football and no matter how much you want to, you just can't win them all.

Did not know all that till this morning. Suddenly, it's the Wild West out there. VAPreps is going to need the Magic Eight Ball for this week's top 10.

Heritage's record was deceptive last year- some bad early season losses but excellent players. In the playoffs they were real tough on us in losing with a lot of the same players for this year- top Qb and Div 1 prospect WR in Watson and others. Many scoffed at our small halftime lead but Heritage continued their late season play to this year. I am surprised but not shocked. I am shocked down this way with loaded Smithfield losing big to Kings Fork. Smithfield had some defensive issues last year and it looks they are still issues there in giving up 400 yards. The other note is perennial doormat Gloucester wiping out Kecoughtan. A big surprise there. In my league Warhill played great in all areas against Southside Churchland. Some beginning to the season. And we have not even started yet!

If week 1 is any indication, this will be a season of surprises. as a pretty good prognosticator, I am now completely lost.

Let's list some of the more notable outcomes of the first week.

How about Ocean Lakes, Oscar C Smith, Lake Taylor and Salem all losing on opening night?

Like you said, Kings Fork wearing out Smithfield was a shocker. At least to me.

Bethel beating Indian River may not have surprised some of you, but I was shocked.

Glouchester winning, and winning big, as mentioned above.

Charles City winning, and scoring 33 points in doing so caught my eye.

Halifax and Franklin Counties both winning.

Nandua and Northampton on the Eastern Shore both chalking up wins.

Highland Springs winning by only 7 over Hermitage really surprised me. Not that I thought that Hermitage was anything less than a great team. But HSHS looks and plays like an NFL team.

I shouldn't have been too shocked by this one, because Goochland has been a top team in recent years. But Essex is always a very tough out. 14-0 is a loss for Essex, but a respectable loss.

What caught you eye?
