The Martinsville Bulldawgs will make a nice playoff run.
I agree about Martinsville by looking at their scores. I made a post a few days ago about a "running clock" that Martinsville will face when playing Graham in round two. Martinsville and Danville area fans, I was JOKING. I was giving you a fun-fanned jab which is awesome to do come playoff time because this is an awesome time of year! I have not seen Martinsville this year. I know historically, the Dogs have had some hillacious teams, especially in the 70's and 80's, but they have always had talent, athletes, and good size. I looked at their scores this year and they are impressive. Their schedule was ridiculously tough.
With the above written, Graham, of which Martinsville will face in round 2 has also had some hillacious teams and a history of winning with good talent and good athletes for decades. My Spartans almost had them beat in Pearisburg, but I can tell you this, that is a talented bunch at Graham this year. Graham has been down for about 12 years according to their fans, but they apparently are back to old form this year. I think Graham wins this game. It will be in Bluefield, played in likely much colder weather and higher elevation than Martinsville is used to and that is a HUGE advantage for Graham. The higher elevation can be difficult for anyone to get used to including athletes, but especially tough for 15-18-19 year old kids that have not trained for it. I can see Martinsville making this is a close game, but do not be surprised if the second half starts to wear on them due to the cold and elevation, and this is where one mistake by a Martinsville defensive player can result in a Graham TD from anywhere on the field, and Graham has the athletes that are not going to be ran down, if they break through the secondary, they pull away.
I have predicted this for about 2 weeks. I think Graham is going to advance to the state title game in Salem. I think their closest contest in the first 4 games, until they reach Salem, will be Martinsville. These are only my opinions, for all I know, Martinsville may win by 35 points in Bluefield. I am not a fortune teller. I can also tell you this, do not sleep on the bandana bunch! Giles has gotten healthy, and they are playing together as a team, and the defense is not crazy talented, but they play together as a defense and don't make many mental mistakes for a High School Defense. When you think of Giles, most people think of the offense and running the wing, but the most recent state title win was because we had a defense to go with the offense. This years Giles defense is very underrated in my opinion and is quietly becoming one of the better, or among the best defenses we have had.
There is little gap or difference in Richlands, Union, Dan River and Graham. But, I think Giles has improved enough to likely be in, or at least being close to the category of the above 4 teams. I suspect that Martinsville, with its athletes and talent, and by looking at their scores may be in that category as well. As for Appo, keep in mind the Dan River game was very close and that Richlands had Appo all but finished off at Appo last year before the late comeback by Appo. Therefore, in conclusion, I don't think their is much separation between 7 teams in the West in Appo, Richlands, Union, Dan River, Graham, Giles, and Martinsville. I truly don't believe that if all the teams played each other, the average margins of victory would be within 10-13 points at most. Appo is the favorite because of last year, and because they return so much and have great leadership and coaching. I suspect Goochland is right there in the East with the above 7 teams. Therefore, if any of the 8 teams discussed above won a title, it would not shock me. I am still picking Graham to meet Appo in Salem because of Graham's athletes which in my opinion, gives them just a slight edge of separation with the other teams in the West other than Appo. With that written, you then have teams like Union that is going to smash you in the face on the line of scrimmage and one other thing about Union making them difficult is, they are talented and big up front on D, and they have the athletes to cover in the secondary when they stack the box. It's going to be a fun few weeks ahead.
