great game, well fought by both sides
1st off, hats off to Rappahannock, they came to play. It was 0-0 until last two minutes of the 1st half and 7-7 last two minutes of the third. Two weeks ago final was 48-14 Essex, but was full of Rapp turnovers etc.
1st half time of possession seemed almost completely equal (1st downs as well). Essex threw like 4 or so offensive schemes at Rapp and they held strong (great d line play by Rapp.) Just a little over a min left in 2nd q, the hike sailed over the Rapp QB and recovered by Essex's Dameon Brooks at the 2. Malik Martin scored a bit later. Backbreaker for Rapp.
Rapp tied it up in the 3rd and it was 7-7 until less than two min in 3rd when Essex's Sterling Hammond had a good run and as was being tackled, handed ball off to QB Broaddus who sprinted down like 50 to 60 yards down the field for the wild, huge score. The crowd finally awoke to that crazy play. Another backbreaker for Rapp. Essex had a big, wild turnover later trying to seal it. Rapp had the long TD but Essex's speedy WR Rasaun Monroe came out of nowhere and stopped the big man. The Trojans eventually got ball back and Broaddus had an insurance TD the end to put it away.
Great game to Rapp, hard fought by both sides. Essex's Ray Ray Newbill had two big pics. One highlight for the crowd was when big man Marquis Lucas (about 300 pound fullback) made a huge run for the 1st down.
Also, very clean game by both sides. Very few penalties by both sides, maybe fewest Essex ones that I've seen in some time.
Great season for Rappahannock and they went down fighting.
Next up, another NND foe Colonial Beach who took care of business down in Surry as expected. Good job to the Beach. Should be another exciting one to battle for the coveted spot in the final four! Better be ready for a throw down.
