Essex 12 (4A) King George 6 Start of 4th Q. Nm

KG blocked a punt and got a safety 19-8. Later Essex picked off a pass and went 65 yard for TD. 26-8. 5:58 to play

Impressive win indeed at KG (on turf) who are supposed to be quite good this year and compete for the Battlefield. Last week KG talking of smacking fellow Neck team W&L in the mouth, well, not this week I suppose.

I saw on the 2A board that some posters were saying how dominant the western teams are and it doesn't seem the East will have a chance this season. I wonder if they realize how fortunate they are that Essex plays in 1A. Essex may be quite focused this year and remain so with a tough schedule and good leadership & organization.

etrojan1 and others - How would you compare this Essex team last year's? Maybe too early to call....but interesting to consider.

It will be interesting to see how KW will match up next week with Essex. Not sure if they can hang but I hope the Cavs have a strong season.

I agree with mmqp and riversportsfan1 that it seems other tough elite 1A teams appear to be Riverheads plus maybe Honaker and the winner of Radford-Galax. Altavista and PM may have lost too much star power to graduation. Of course, it's way early and anything can happen.

To early to call. In just 2 games, I would say Essex defense is as solid as it was last year. They've kept the team in these 2 games until the offense got their ducks in a row. Passing game needs to tighten up a little more. Once that part gets completely on track, they will be hard to stop. Like everyone else, Essex is still working out some kinks. Next up is 2A King William, 5A Deep Run, a bye and then 3A James Monroe for the closing out of the non district games. There were plenty of eyes at the game sizing things up...W&L, James Monroe, Colonial Beach and others that we will play later. Essex better come with their A game. We still have some major battles coming.

Essex schedule is brutal. And so is their offensive line. They don't need to throw it very much if at all. I didn't see the KG game, but that line wore Goochlands butt out in the second half, and I can see that happening over and over again if they stick with the run.

Riverheads is solid on offense, as always, but they are slow on defense. They have always struggled against fast spread teams that can throw it. I would not be surprised to see an Essex-Riverheads match-up in the state finals.

KG had opportunities but didn't capitalize (inside the 5yd line twice).....Essex took care of business and looking good as of right now for that #1 seed.

Twobyfour.... I agree. Huge line that can move for their sizes. D line as well..except when they go smaller for speed. They can get it done running is true but it's nice to have a good passing game mixed in. They have guys to step up the passing game. Just gotta woke out a couple things. It's just game 2. So they have time to up that part of the offense.
