The Northumberland soccer team just headed out to certainly one of the best send offs I've seen in over 20 years involved in sports. Heck of a job by the 1st year Head AD Coach Rock (been at NHS a long time), the NHS and NES Principals and the crew.

1st the boys were treated to a pep rally at the Elementary School where 600 little excited and happy kids cheered, had signs, and chanted Indians, Indians! The boys said they felt like rock stars. Then the show moved to the high school where the band rocked as hundreds of students and adults lined the street as the new charter bus was escorted out by a parade over 30 big and loud vehicles.

Gotta love small town America!

Next up is powerhouse Galax - state champs every year or most (last 5 or 6 years). Great every year and play on turf at home. Odds are against the Indians for sure...

I will try to update when possible. Rappahannock plays Auburn at 9. Northumberland plays Galax at 11.

Forgot to thank our awesome United States Congressman Rob Wittman for cheering for the underdog Northumberland today as the charter bus rolled by!

Mr. Wittman serves the people of Eastern Virginia from the Washington suburbs to Hampton Roads. We love you in the Neck. Run for Governor!!!

Also, huge thanks to Virginia Tech for allowing little Northumberland to practice on your awesome game field. NHS Coach Smith is alumnus of Va Tech. Well done!

Half of our NHS kids have probably never even seen a turf field besides on TV.

Does anyone have any details on Auburn? Can they compete with Rapp?

Any thoughts on Galax? Does NHS have a shot?

It was Rapp v Galax for the title last season. Rapp lost their great goalie for emergency surgery an hour before game time last year. Devastating for the team. He is back

(now there has been a debate for the last three years who has the best keeper - Rapp's Senior or Northumberland Jr.?) Of course, we have a difference of opinion ha.

Both are great. Lets see who makes the most amazing saves tomorrow?

I hope Rapp and NHS both win! That would be awesome. I'm out. Hitting the road.

Usually, I would try to stay off of message boards about high school soccer though I have a vested interest in this year's state championships as a Rappahannock fan. I wanted to provide you evidence that our goalie is the district goalie of the year and regional goalie of the year for a reason. Below are charts that combine the 2018 and 2019 season of both Northumberland and Rappahannock's COMMON opponents. Both teams have 18 games factored into the table and were treated equally.

It would be a dream match to see these two powerhouse defense's play one another! Best of luck to our Northern Neck Teams!!

Northumberland (2018-2019) Goals Against
Goal total: 32
Mathews 4
West Point 2
Lancaster 10
Northumberland 0
Washington and Lee 2
Essex 3
Rappahannock 11

Rappahannock (2018-2019) Goals Against
Goal total: 15
Mathews 1
West Point 1
Lancaster 2
Northumberland 6
Washington and Lee 4
Essex 1
Rappahannock 0

Glad to hear to your excellent perspective! Maybe I was not clear, I have no issue with Rapp's goalie being on 1st team. He deserves it. Great kid and player on a great team.

My argument was last season and now, NHS keeper is one of the best in the state last year and this year as well (top 3 in the state). As for analytics, statistics, details, odds, history, records, I am tad familiar. How many years you would you like to compare? 1, 3, 20?

NHS keeper been named 2nd team NND keeper now three years in a row since he was a Freshman- making him ineligible for Region and State honors even though he has been outstanding on a team that was horrific just three seasons ago. As a 10th grade captain last season, on a team that had won only 7 games in five seasons, he and his D recorded 8 shutouts - 2nd best in state only to Powerhouse Galax. He has 3 of 4 shutouts in 4 region and state games this year.

During our 13 year run at Essex, the system produced 4 all State and 4 all Region (most 1st teamers, many when 1A played with 2A. Current Jr. NHS keeper would be ranked in top 3 of those 8 by his sophomore year.

Best of luck to both Keepers and Neck Teams. Trust me, I want them both to win and will happily pull for whoever makes it!

That does stink for the NHS keeper, but sometimes that’s how the chips fall. The 2000-01 Tidewater District had the two best Class 1 volleyball teams in the state. WP won the district & regional titles, but lost to district/region runner-up New Kent in the state semis. So this state tournament should be that NHS keeper’s opportunity, y’know? Sounds like he’s making the most of it!
