The #2 seed Strasburg Rams defeated the #3 seed Wilson Memorial Green Hornets by a count of 54-47 in the opening round of the 2A-East Region Tournament on Tuesday night.
Down 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, Strasburg began the second period on a 7-0 run and never trailed from there. The Rams got six three-point makes, four coming from Tyler Brill (11.5PPG), who matched his season-high with 15 points. Mekhi Hendricks chipped in 10 points, converting a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line. That marked the 15th game this season he scored in double-figures.
Nearly recording a double-double for the Rams was Ryan Smoot with nine points and 10 rebounds. Though out-rebounded 28-23 for the game, Strasburg capitalized on their outside makes as well as getting to the foul line, drawing 22 fouls on the Green Hornets. Meanwhile, Wilson Memorial drew only nine fouls on Strasburg.
In defeat for Wilson Memorial, Justin Leary scored 13 points - 11 of them coming in the second half. The problem was they couldn't get both him and 7-foot-1 center Dean Shaner on track at the same time. Shaner scored all six of his points in the first half.
Wilson Memorial's season ends in the first round of regionals for the second year in a row. The Green Hornets finished 16-9 overall.
With the win, Strasburg moves to 21-6 overall and awaits the winner of Bruton/Amelia in the quarterfinals. It was Bruton that eliminated them in that same round of the postseason a year ago, 72-43.
