DEEP CREEK. To me, this is another school that stays under the radar, football wise. Like Churchland.

Playing in the very tough Southestern District, they struggle most years to find a few wins. Most of the teams in this district are 5a or 6a.

Rebounding from a dismal 2014 campaign, they showed improvement last fall. They improved from 0-10, scoring only 48 points while giving up nearly 400, to 4 wins last season.

Their roster shows 14 seniors graduating, but a ton of sophomores. This tells me they were young and relatively inexperienced last season. But those young players probably received a fair amount of playing time and should be ready to get after it this year.

Can they build on last season's improvement and add to their win total? Do they have a few kids that stand out? Can they sneak up on some teams this Autumn?

We need some help from our Tidewater/Hampton Roads friends to learn about this team. How about it Devils? This is your turf, share with us.

Another team about which I know nothing, other than the info available online. Looks like they were pretty good for most of the 90's, then had a really great run around the turn of the century. The Hornets were one of the very best teams in all the Old Dominion in 2000 and 2001, losing what I'm sure was a heartbreaker to Centreville in the 2000 Division 6 title game. They won two playoff games in '01, and none since; no playoff trips since 2004. Probably not too great an outlook for this season, I'd guess, but maybe someone from down that way can fill us in.

Here's another demographics question: what sustains Chesapeake's high population? Why are there so many large schools there? Is Chesapeake's population tied into the naval base and related industries in Norfolk and Portsmouth? I hope to get a chance someday to make a proper visit to that area. I've spent one weekend in Norfolk, one day trip to Portsmouth, and that's it. Never been to Virginia Beach nor Chesapeake - nor anywhere on the Eastern Shore.

It seems as if the population is related to the military bases in the area. The U.S. Military is the largest employer in the region.

Wow, you do need to put this area on your itinerary. One good thing about living in here central Virginia is that you grow up going in every direction. West to the mountains, North to the DC attractions, East to the bay and rivers, and South to the Outer Banks. And a couple or three hours on the road will get you to any of them. This same rational applies to going to high school football games.

I hope we can get a couple of more comments on Deep Creek before we move on.

As far as what sustains the Tidewater economy, for sure its the military bases and the shipbuilding industry. That's an oversimplification, but these are the two principle drivers.
