As I rode down Beal St. behind Kreiter Stadium, I saw my young men grinding on the football field, full pads, locked, loaded and focused! Coaches teaching, kids learning, expectations high as a kite! Looking forward to seeing them scrimmage against N Stafford this Saturday and again next week.... then August 24th.... GAME TIME!
Who's as excited as me!

Looking forward to seeing you again Sat., my friend. My traveling companion can't come. Something about taking a knitting class in Charlottesville. Poor Bleeding Navy. He used to be such a macho guy.

Unfortunately, I have to attend a VHSL Officials Commissioners meeting in Charlottesville on Saturday.

The VHSL is trying to implement some very sound changes and I look forward to hearing them.

One of the topics we will be discussing is official recruitment and retention. If we dont pick up our numbers high school sports will be doomed once the current core of officials retire.

Its really a dire situation. Only 10 of 80 officials in my association alone are younger than 35. The pay is good, but the abuse officials take is awful. I had a grown man verbally attack and threaten a young (28 year old) lady umpire after a game, because she allegedly missed a sliding play at second during a JV game. Site administrators did nothing. Needless to say she was scared to death and quit. Just B.S.!

I never miss the opportunity to rib my good buddy, Bleeding Navy. So I'll give him a break on the knitting class this weekend!

But, as he stated, high school officials face an almost insurmountable task.

We have all seen coaches, spectators, and especially parents go nuts at officials. For sure, sometimes they miss a call. But what has happened to civility? Virtually every official will respond appropriately to a question asked properly. But, come at them in a verbal or threatening manner and you will at best get ignored, or at worst be dealt with by authorities.

We all complain sometimes about the quality of officiating. Well guess what, harrasment constantly shrinks the pool of available officials. Officials associations are at dangerously low numbers already. It's mighty hard for them to cull marginally good members. Driving people away from the profession with endless critisim is not going to fix the problem.

We all need to be part of the solution. Not only do we personally need to be a bit more restrained, we need not agree with fellow fans as they launch verbal abuse at officials. In fact, within reason, we need to actively act to suppress such abuse.
