Fluvanna County High School Accepting Applications for Head Football Coach

Hate to say this but i have to lol. Some guys on swva board said 5 of them could coach the appo team as well or better than coach smith. Perhaps they should apply.

Come on man. That's a mischaracterization of that post. That wasn't a shot at Coach Smith, but a compliment to the insane talent Appo has had the last couple of years.

This was the actual quote... "The coaching is good but with those athletes we could take 5 or 6 of us from this forum and form a coaching staff and win a ring or two"

That actually seems like a salute to BOTH coaching and players.

And if you're going to reference that, it would only be fair to reference all the props given to Coach Smith, the players, and fans by SWVAsports posters.

I think he forgets that some of us on SWVA lurk here as well and can call his old ass out on stuff he misquotes. Lol

No where even close to being mischaracterized when you read the post leading up to and after. The context it was phrased in was nothing more than an attempt to down play what appo has done.

This is the post leading up to that one... "How much success did Appo have prior to the past couple of years? Are they having a good run of athletes or was there a coaching change?"

That's a fair question.

I posted this..."
Appo's coach Dough Smith was at Heritage-Lynchburg from 09-11. He went 3-7, 4-7, and 6-5 and was fired after the '11 season. From 09-11 Appo went 9-3, 5-5, 10-2

He started the '12 season at Appo. Appo has gone 4-6, 7-5, 6-5, 15-0, 15-0, and 12-1 so far this year. Heritage has gone 12-2, 13-1, 8-3, 4-7, 8-5, 12-1(this year, so far) since he left. I'm sure he's a good coach, but the run of athletes he's had is crazy. Will be interesting to see how Appo performs once these kids are gone. An article about his history is below.

http://www.newsadvance.com/sports/h...cle_205a2264-305a-502c-941e-1dcc98ed8717.html "

Another post..."We have a ton of respect for the raiders. I've called last years version the best high school team I've ever seen. But that was 2016. This is a new year with New raiders and new bears. Thank god lol. "

And another..."Don't take that serious. That's more of a props to the athletes of those teams than it is a shot at the coaches. C'mon man"

And another..."He was only giving a solid compliment to the caliber of athletes y’all had. Not a slight to ur coach."

Those are the posts before and immediately after the one you paraphrased. How in the world does someone take a compliment to the quality of players a team has and view it as an insult?

If you want I'll go back and search the other threads and post all the compliments about Coach Smith.

I don't know how a fan of a team playing for a possible 3rd Championship in a row can be insulted because someone said they had good athletes. I mean, it takes could good athletes AND coaching to be successful. It doesn't matter how good the coach is, if he only has 5'5" 135 lb players he's not winning anything. Coaching and players go hand in hand. Union had a 4 Star player this year. Didn't mean they don't have good coaches.

something interesting to think about in respect to Coach Smith, I have heard many people applaud his strength program and how he has developed the weight room. Perhaps the success immediately after his departure from Heritage, and his success currently now a few years in at Appo could be a testament to solid development of athletes as well. To paraphrase Bill Parcells a bit here, we can all be given the same groceries but not every one can fix a half decent dinner. In coach's case, but it is an example of being great athletes yes, but I think we see he is extremely successful at developing athletes and creating ways they can achieve their full potential. Not all coaches can do this, as many fans would point out. You can give me and Wolfgang Puck an expensive porterhouse steak but I bet ya he does a much better job cooking it. Great athletes yes, but takes the right coach to push them to the limits of their potential.

I agree.

And to playfully be devil's advocate, if they gave Wolfgang Puck a piece of shoe leather and you or I a ribeye, I bet he wouldn't win the cooking contest. haha

This may not be popular, but Phil Robbins is a HOF coach, but once DC Barry Jones left Powell Valley and the run of athletes slowed down, PV took a nose dive.

Sometimes it's the coach, sometimes it's the players, sometimes it's both. There's no doubt that Coach Smith has a good program going. That was never a question. There was only a compliment to the great athletes Appo has had.

I bet if Union had Scruggs at QB this year throwing to Mitchell, handing off to 3 talented backs AND running read option, to go along with our D, we would have scored 50+ points a game and been unstoppable.

I will agree with you on the shoe leather part lol, a good coach I think maximizes potential for kids but doesn't always mean they will win and earn state titles...if you're up against the 8 ball in terms of talent you can coach your butt off and still come up short (goes back to the other old saying not the x's and o's so much as it is the jimmies and joes or as my head coach used to say "think players not plays") however, I bet you Wolfgang Puck may lose that cooking contest, but he would make a darn fine piece of shoe leather lol

I can agree with all that, but as far as the cooking aspect of the conversation goes, I nominate you to take the first bite of shoe leather. :D
