Eagles place second in Wildcat Duals

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

KING, N.C. -- Franklin County's three-year reign as champions of the West Stokes (N.C.) Wildcat Duals has come to an end.

Davie County (N.C.), last year's state dual-team runner-up in Class 4-A, bested the Eagles, 47-20, in a head-to-head contest Saturday in the five-team, day-long event.

Davie County placed first with a 4-0 record, followed by FCHS (3-1), West Forsyth (N.C.) (2-2), McMichael (N.C.) (1-2) and host West Stokes (0-4), coached by former Eagles mat boss Kris Kahila.

The Eagles routed West Stokes, 68-5, bested West Forsyth, 52-18, and pounded McMichael, 60-6, in their other matches.

"We wrestled like it was our first event,' said FCHS head coach Emanuel Brown, now in his seventh year at the helm.

The Eagles are playing catch-up to a number of Virginia teams this season because of FCHS's run in the football playoffs which involved Brown, a member of Chris Jones' coaching staff, and some of his wrestlers.

Also, teams in North Carolina start their season two weeks ahead of their Virginia counterparts, Brown said.

"Davie was a strong duals team and a little more polished than we are at this point in the season. We'll catch up,' Brown said.

"Our wrestlers are very intense competitors that work harder than any team I have ever coached in any sport. This will be a special season,' Brown said.

FCHS wrestlers Joe Collins (119 pounds), a sophomore, Zach Pruitt (145), a senior, and Jonathan Jones (171), a junior, each finished with a 4-0 mark and each was selected to the all-tournament team.

Joining them, was senior James Bisnett (160), one of six FCHS wrestlers to post a 3-1 mark.

Also finishing with 3-1 records were senior David Carey (140), junior Hunter Adams (152), junior Andrew Turner (112), sophomore Josh Altice (130) and junior Taylor Horner (285).

Senior Sonny Wingfield (215) was 2-1, while sophomore Drew Brock (135) and freshmen Ryan Clingenpeel (103), Brock Adams (125) and Josh Stone (189) were 2-2.

FCHS returns to action in the two-day St. Christopher Invitational in Richmond, Friday and Saturday.
