If the ball is fumbled forward in high school and recovered by the offense, where is it spotted? At the spot of the fumble or recovery. I know that in the pros it comes back to the spot of the fumble.
I saw the same thing last night and it was awarded where it was recovered, about 3 yards past the line of scrimmage. Everything took place near mid-field so I don't know if there is a rule about, say inside the 20?
The ball is spotted at the point of recovery in the NFL. The "Fumble Forward" rule only comes into play during the last two minutes of each half, or on 4th down. In those cases, it comes back to the point of fumble. Otherwise, the result is the same as high school.
No, there is no rule that prevents a fumble from being advanced by the non-fumbler in games played under FED rules. On 4th down or on a two point try if the ball carrier knows that he will not make the line to gain there is no provision that effectively prevents this loophole. Fumble the ball forward and out of bounds beyond the line to gain on 4th down...game officials may possibly rule illegal forward pass. In states that use NCAA rules (Texas) this loophole is closed. On 4th down or a try only the fumbler can advance for the offensive team. Anyone can recover. Forward fumbles out of bounds are also returned to the spot of the fumble. Exceptions like this make the NCAA and NFL rule book about 30% longer than the FED book.
