Gate City vs Eastside (1A) @ UVA Wise (benefit game)

JV tips off at 6 and the varsity will follow. I'll try to post a few updates when I can. My signal is usually terrible in Wise though. This game will be interesting.....Eastside has built a solid program but they lost some big pieces from last year.

I think GC will be very solid this year without Mac. Better than most think they will be actually. Hope I'm right...will know shortly.

GC led 37-16 at the end of the 1st then went flat only scoring 10 pts in the 2nd qtr. Eastside came roaring back with a bunch of deep shots and cut the lead to 8 at halftime. GC leads at the half 47-39.

Very sloppy play and bad defense by GC in the 2nd qtr and the Spartans made them pay.

78-67 Final. Eastside cut the lead to 4 or 5 pts at one point in the 2nd half. GC played very sloppy and showed no signs of rebounding or defense after building up that big 1st qtr lead. Eastside played inspired ball and made some big shots. The Spartans are scrappy. Good luck to those guys the rest of the way.

Did Eastside lose a lot from last year's team? (Besides their all star player)

They lost both of their big men, Lawson and Sturgil. There was a couple familiar names and faces from last years team but I cant remember who all they lost. I'm thinking maybe two of their most productive guards are gone too. Maybe someone on here that is an Eastside fan can help me out with this..?

They are a scrappy team but GC played very sloppy minus the 1st qtr. I wont judge how good either team is gonna be based off of what I saw last night.

So true - first game jitters - not in basketball shape yet - et al......

I'm sure GC will be there come state playoff time - they still have Zac and Dean.

I agree. The first quarter was more impressive than anything I seen from them all last year (minus the high flying dunks of course). I was shocked! However, they shot around 90% or a little over so sustaining that is almost impossible throughout the whole game and I knew they wouldn't keep up that pace.

Now on the flip side, the other quarters were equally as unimpressive. Complete Jekyll and Hyde performance. They went stone cold and looked completely lost and gave ZERO effort while Eastside kept nailing shot after shot after offensive rebound after shot. Eastside lost alot of players from last years squad but they are the same gritty team that just wont quit. They share that same quality with Honaker...both of those teams are tough as nails. Even if the individual talent isnt there they always play smart and are coached well and just don't beat themselves.

So credit to Eastside for keeping the hammer down and getting back into what looked like an inevitable blowout in the 1st qtr. Its not like GC let a very poor quality team back into a game.....Eastside seems solid. I'll be interested to see how they do the rest of the year.

And also Marshall, if you dont mind to leak a little info....whats going on that's so bad that you wont be following your team this year?
