With the geographical misfits of D2, I was wondering if it would make more sense to eliminate the East/West deal, and go North/South and draw a line across the state. I scratch my head every time I see the D2 standings as to why some western schools are in the "east".

I'll never understand Wilson Memorial and Buffalo Gap being in the East and Buckingham being in the west.

Still wouldn't work. Imagine the bus ride from Big Stone Gap to a school on the Far East side of the state. Honestly if you split the state into 4 regions is the only real way but I don't know how they would do it. Far more 2A schools in say the SW than the NE.

4 Regions, Top 8 teams from each. That would bring back regional champions. Then regional champs I think play based on power points. 1vs4 2vs3.

The problem with 2A regions is there are lot more BIG 2A schools in certain regions of the state than others. The old Region B was full of "bigger schools" and they usually cruised once they got through regionals. Also there were a number of really good schools that were left out of the playoffs in years past.

This is what the VHSL is going to next year.

The most puzzling school of all is Randolph Henry. I believe they are 2A West, and they are located well East of many "east" schools. Prince Edward just up the road is west of RH, but in the East.

Amelia is the same. Amelia is 2 hours east of Wilson Memorial and Buffalo Gap.

Buckingham is in between Amelia and Wilson Memorial.
So Amelia is in the East, yet Buckingham which is further east than Amelia is in the West. Then Gap and Wilson who are an hour an a half West of Buckingham are in the East.
I just don't get it.

Actually on a map, Charlotte County is west of Prince Edward County. Buckingham County and Charlotte county are located just north and south of Prince Edward. However, both have more of their county towards the west than PE, as PE is more towards the east. Amelia is farther east compared to all of those counties.

Except for a few instances of travel, North & South makes much more sense.

A first round game for Windsor (Isle of Wight county) to Gate City or Lee will be a tough trip to swallow. Both are in the south but on opposite sides of the state. Even King William, Goochland, Amelia, Nottoway, Bluestone and many others would make for 5+ hours for a first round game to go to the southwest.

It will never be a perfect system, due to the way the state is geographically.

I agree. That is the reason they still have East/West, but then you have the issue of some teams in the East being more West than other teams in the West.
