I won't start this out by saying screw all gimmick systems because I'm not some cranky old guy who still remembers the forward pass becoming popular(and being angry when it did) because fun football is fun to watch. What I will say is if you need to gimmick to cover up your shortcomings in your coaching then it becomes really lame and boring. If you're going to lose to a team by 35+ then you have problems extending well beyond the realm of having a gimmick cover them up. Learn to coach good ball first then get creative later.

Again, I have no problem with good football of any kind but complicating things when you already have issues and producing bad football is not good for anyone, fans or players alike. That guy down in Arkansas who pioneered the "never punt, always onside kick" philosophy was successful because he was a good coach before he came up with that idea. He wasn't some schlub hoping for a miracle, he was already a good coach and said what can I do to make things a little better and he continues to innovate(his idea for this year was to lateral a ton because there's so much yardage to be gained from it) to this day but he was a championship-caliber coach before that stuff came into being.

e: this should extend for just being overly complicated as well as completely gimmicky. Variety is surely the spice of life but get the basics down before you try to resemble a college team. Half the reason you see more blowouts than ever is because guys are making goofy calls at all times and they never work out and suddenly your team that was down 14-3 is down 28-3 forty seconds later and any fight your kids have evaporates.

Some very valid points sir. Many of the posters on here have offense preferences, but one thing I have seen is good programs/coaches utilize a defined system for years.

Salem, LT, and Dinwiddie (last three 4a state champs) have used the same offense for years. Yes, they tweak it to fit personnel, the system is taught from pewee to high school. Louisa, Lafeyette, Sherando and Courtland are some other sound examples. Although each offense is different they all stick to their systems.

New coaches seem to try and force their chosen system when they dont have the personnell to do so. Finally, trickery is fun, but only if you have success and a play is indeed "trickery". Simply defined as doing something out of the norm. These new coaches have no norm, so why use trickery.
