In the final game of Riverheads' annual season-opening tournament, sponsored this year by big-time fans Cox Construction Company, the Streaks turned on the defensive pressure and outscored the Lady Gladiators 14-2 down the stretch to post the win tonight and even their record in the tournament at 1-1. RHS also finished 1-1, after beating Covington on Wednesday night. Although the event was not a "tournament" in the usual sense, Buffalo Gap would be able to lay claim to winning it, since they won tonight's earlier game over Covington after knocking off Harrisonburg Wednesday.
Riverheads appeared well on its way to its own 2-0 finish as sisters Hannah and Emma Grubb each knocked down three-pointers to open the third quarter as H'burg came out of the locker room stone cold. In fact it took the Streaks almost six minutes to score and by that time RHS was on top 27-21. They took another six-point lead at 31-25 before the Streaks' pressure D brought them----well---"streaking" back for the victory.
The game was somewhat ragged with a ton of turnovers on both sides, likely due to the early season jitters. So it is a safe bet that each will settle into more of an offensive rhythm as they move through their respective district schedules.
A disappointing loss for the Lady Gladiators as their 1-A team would have earned MAJOR bonus points if they could have knocked off the 5-A Streaks, but that difference in competition level alone should give RHS some consolation for being able to stay in this game until the end. Better things are likely ahead for Coach Wassick's team.
