WISE, Va. – In a battle of Russell County rivals, Lebanon came out on top.
The Pioneers used a big second half to pull away for a 48-31 win over the Honaker Tigers in the Powell Valley National Bank Tip-Off Classic girls basketball tournament at UVa-Wise’s Convocation Center.
“I thought our defense was good,” said Lebanon coach Rex Parker. “I thought Alyssa Padilla did an excellent job on [LeeAnna] McNulty, she’s tough to defend. The other girls gave help when she got the ball; we wanted to collapse and make her kick it out. Another key was rebounding. I thought it was our best job of defensive rebounding.”
There were four lead-changes in the first quarter, but Emily Musick hit a jump shot to give Lebanon a 9-8 advantage just before the buzzer and the Pioneers wouldn’t trail again.
Leading 20-15 at halftime, Lebanon’s Kara Long and Averie Price hit early 3s in the third quarter and the Pioneers were on their way. They held Honaker to only five points the final eight minutes to win it going away.
“Lebanon has a good group,” said Honaker coach Misty Davis Miller. “They are athletic and they played well. Coach Parker has a good team, he does a good job with them.”
The Tigers needed to shoot the ball well to stay with Lebanon. They wouldn’t fall, making only 24 percent of their shots, while the Pioneers made over 40 percent of their field goals attempts.
“To me that was the big factor,” Miller said. “On a normal night for us, we shoot better from the floor and we’re right in the game. You can’t shoot poorly and beat a good team.”
Price had a game-high 17 points and also pulled nine rebounds. Kara Long contributed 10 points in the win.
“Averie has been shooting the ball well,” Parker said. “We look to go to her and she delivered. … We had the edge in rebounds [34-30] and that was our worry coming in.”
McNulty was the only Tiger in double-figures with 15 points in the loss.
