Thanks pizzza as always for keeping us posted. This was my first Gladiator girls game and I have to confess that it was not quite the 1 over 8 rout that I expected it to be. Yes, Wilson was clearly the better team and there was never any serious doubt about the outcome, but Coach Wassick has a scrappy little team, with only one senior by the way, and they will be capable of making some regional noise.

Speaking of which, I believe the correct date for their next game will be the 19th. Unless something has changed, Region B of Group 1 will have a Monday/Wednesday/Friday girls schedule and a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday boys game plan, so that fans can see all the games.

Looking at your stats above, I am surprised to see that Hutchinson was the leading scorer. Yes of course I heard her name called often, but I guess I thought it was Sondrol and Baska leading the way. Speaking of her, she is the real deal with a sweet outside shot and although only a freshman, supposedly the college coaches are already taking notice.

Sara Moore led the Gladiators in scoring I am sure (I didn't keep score) and if there was one stretch that had to please Coach Wassick, it was the final 1:52 of the first half. Wilson was leading 26-16 when Sondrol was fouled. Also an unrelated technical that left most of us in the stands bewildered was called on Eva Frederick, who one of my sources said is a real sweetheart who wouldn't hurt a fly and doesn't even know any bad words.

A Wilson girl did end up face down on the floor during that same time frame, but it was not clear if Frederick had anything to do with that. But at any rate, the T was assessed, Wilson made three of the four charity tosses to go up 29-16, and things looked bleak for the Big Red.

But in some strange way, those fouls fired up the Lady Gladiators, who poured in ten points in that final 1:52, including two perfect triples from Moore, to leave them at least within reach at the half at 36-26. Wilson then quickly put the game away by scoring the first 7 points of the third quarter, but the Gladiators kept hustling.

So RHS gets some rest now before regionals start and the Lady Hornets will see if they can fend off tonight's other winners (Stuarts Draft, East Rock and Buffalo Gap) for the tournament crown. As I lamented earlier today, it is a doggone shame that we can't have a true tournament atmosphere instead of all these home-court games, because those four in the same arena on the same night would make for a great evening's entertainment.
