Riverheads ended the first half on an 8-0 run tonight, including the first triples of the season by brothers Adam and Grant Painter, and then pulled steadily away in the second half to an easy win over the homestanding Generals.
In the early going we saw what you would expect to see between a team playing its fifth or sixth game of the season vs. a team that was still focused on football less than a week ago. As a result, the Big Red started out slowly, hitting four foul shots to open the scoring until an old-fashioned three point play by Josh Kinzel got the offense going. He then hit the first RHS triple of the year as the visitors led 12-8 after one.
Stonewall then found its own three-point stroke for the early part of the second quarter, led by Michael Stout and Kadin Hitt. The Generals actually led 22-18 late in the quarter before the Painter brothers collaborated to give RHS a 26-22 lead at the break.
Riverheads then blew it open with a 21-4 third quarter. Zach Adams came to life with three hard-earned hoops, Grant Painter added two more treys, and younger brother Adam canned another that just barely beat the horn to put RHS ahead 47-26.
Drew Bond became the fourth Gladiator to hit from behind the arc early in the fourth and Kinzel added another one as well. All told the Big Red canned eight of them on the evening, a total that I am sure Coach Coffey will take any night of the week.
Grant led all scorers with 23, Adam added 10, and Kinzel finished with the nine points already mentioned. A handful of others divided up the remaining points as everybody saw significant action.
The new kid on the block, 6'5" transfer student Honor Robinson, will of course need some time to adjust but showed serious promise. He has the natural tools needed for the game, and certainly did not lack hustle. He may have only scored two points tonight on a stickback but don't count on that being a normal total to expect from him. (I even noticed some three-point range in warm-ups!)
In JV action, the Junior Gmen never trailed and posted a 38-18 win. The coaching staff liberally subbed all 15 guys in and out of the game, in an effort to find the best combinations. As a result, no one player really stood out, but that score certainly would seem to indicate that the defense is ahead of the offense at this point in the season.
Neither team has time to rest on its laurels as the Gladiators swing right back in to action Saturday night at East Rock. Despite getting a pair of 20 point wins tonight, the Big Red will be heavy underdogs in both games tomorrow night so it might be a blessing in disguise to get them over with early. RHS then travels to Luray on Wednesday before finally getting a home game against R E Lee next Friday. Who knows...by that time the Gladiators might be battle-tested enough to give the Leemen a game.....
