In a very efficient display tonight on both sides of the ball, the Big Red rolled over the visiting Leemen behind five touchdowns from Aiden Miller and Landon Lightner. (Hope I am right on both names....didn't bring a program home with me and am doing this from memory.) The Gladiators added the two-point conversion after four of those five scores.

Miller, only an eighth-grader, scored the first two TDs on runs from about 5 and 15 yards. Lightner, primarily known as a receiver, then padded the lead with a 20 yard sweep around right end and a nice reception in the end zone from about the same distance. Both his scores came at the same end of the field and for that matter in the same far corner.

With Riverheads leading 30--0 at the break, the Leemen made their strongest push to avoid the shutout when they returned the second half kick-off to the RHS 47 and then marched confidently down in to the red zone. But a false start penalty at the worst possible time stalled the drive, and they came away empty.

To add insult to injury, the Gladiators took over on their own 21 and Miller went the distance untouched on the very next play to put the final nail in the coffin. That put the running clock into effect and the game ended mercifully soon thereafter.

In less than 48 hours, we will know if the Juniors have inspired their big brothers to make it a clean sweep or if the Leemen will get their revenge. Looks like we will have a nice, if maybe a little bit cool, evening for that particular little get-together in Gypsy Hill.
