Although the big game of the night was over in Fishersville (congratulations to the Storm by the way), there was plenty of excitement at Riverheads tonight as an enthusiastic crowd celebrated Little League Night as well as a pair of victories over Waynesboro, winning the JV game 49-35 and the Varsity contest 66-44. I see that the Lady Gladiators won at Waynesboro but I have not seen a JV score posted. Considering how well the RHS JVs have done this year, they would have been expected to win, so maybe that means that the Big Red went 4-0 tonight.
In tonight's varsity boys game, RHS led from wire to wire and except for a brief stretch early in the second quarter, they were never seriously threatened. Four different players combined for 10 three-pointers and in their most balanced scoring effort of the season, those same four finished in double figures with a fifth one needing just one more basket.
Will Gardner led the way with 17 including five triples. He was followed in order by the rest of the sharpshooters.............Henley Dunlap with 13 including two triples, J P Crawford with 12 points and a triple, and freshman Jaxon Duff, who continues to improve and finished with 11 points and two triples. Jackson Brammer finished with 8 points on four tough inside baskets.
The remaining five points were scored late in the game by reserves Chris Dotson and Chase Donathan. As we have seen all season, Grayson Ward and Joe George continued their heavy duty inside hustling but neither scored tonight. That left junior Gabe Miller, who had the entire student section begging him to score in the final minutes, but his two or three attempts failed to find the mark.
The first quarter was the Crawford/Gardner show as the duo combined for all 15 Gladiator points, including three triples between them, as RHS eased out to a 15-8 lead. Waynesboro picked up a bit in the second quarter behind a couple of nice plays from Haden Morris, but 17-15 was as close as they could get. Riverheads led 29-22 at the break.
The Gladiators spurted in the third quarter to remove all doubt about the outcome, as they outscored the visitors 25-11 in the period. With a 54-33 lead heading into the fourth, the subs pretty much finished out the game.
In the JV game, eighth-grader Sam Jarvis knocked down 10 first-quarter points, including a pair of triples, to jump start the Big Red to a 14-9 lead. The rest of the gang joined in the action in the second and although Waynesboro had its moments, the Gladiators never let them back in the game as the Big Red continued to strike from the arc and also had some impressive fast-break plays. The final score was almost an exact match for Waynesboro's victory on its home floor the first time around.
Riverheads now gets a "bit" of a break as they don't play again until Wednesday, weather-permitting. However, the schedule will be unkind as they host Wilson that night and then turn right around and visit Staunton the very next night. If they can survive that gauntlet, they then get a long weekend before closing out the regular season with a Senior Night game on Monday the 17th, when they will host Buffalo Gap.
As for regional possibilities, I do not even TRY to follow that system, but last I heard, the Gladiators were holding on to the 8th seed in Region 2-B. Logically we would think that tonight's win over the Class 3 Little Giants would help them stay in contention for a playoff berth, even if the next two do look pretty challenging.
