It was another grind it out game, the type that seems to be defining Riverheads' season, but the Gladiators got the win tonight up at Quicksburg, as they recovered from a slow start and eased past the Generals 46-23. Hopefully the win will give the Big Red the boost they need with Stuarts Draft coming to Greenville Friday, followed by a visit from Mountain View on Monday. So after a number of close losses, maybe, just maybe the Gladiators can put together a win streak and head into Wilson next week with renewed confidence.
Bennett Dunlap was the leading scorer tonight as his personal 7-point spurt broke a 10-10 tie and gave the Gladiators the lead for good late in the first half. He added 8 more points in the third quarter and for a while, it looked like he might outscore the home team all by himself as the third quarter ended with him having 18 points and the Generals only 14 as a team. When he was pulled for good early in the final period, he was still ahead of the home team 20-19. His point total featured the Big Red's only four triples of the night.
Point guard Ryan Farris added 8 points to the Gladiator total and Carter Mooneyham came off the bench to score 6 as all 10 players saw action tonight in this one.
Although the Gladiators will gladly take this victory and build on it, it did mark the sixth game in a row in which they scored less than 50, after hitting 63 and 64 against Stuarts Draft and Wilson in the two games preceding that string. Farris and Dunlap have each had some decent individual games lately, but a goal down the stretch will be to find a third and maybe even a fourth scorer if the Gladiators hope to make a playoff run.
As much as the defenses ruled the varsity game, the Gladiator JVs put on yet another of their offensive clinics as they roared past the Baby Generals 71-23, hitting their highest point total of the season. They took control early and although I did not keep score for them, I unofficially had sharpshooter Will Gardner for six three-pointers. The Junior G-men are a well-balanced team and a ton of fun to watch, so Big Red basketball fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.
