Riverheads and East Rockingham made it exactly to the halfway point Tuesday evening before the skies opened up in Elkton and sent everyone headed for cover. The rain delay came in the middle of the fourth inning with the score tied at 2-2. Considering what we heard on the weather report later and the fact that Buffalo Gap and Stuarts Draft did get their game in tonight, it appears that Augusta County may have been spared the deluge that Rockingham received.
A few die-hard fans stuck around and it did initially appear that the mandatory half hour delay was going to be sufficient, but just as the grounds crew seemed to have the infield ready to go, the rains came again and chased the crowd away for good. As I was leaving, the varsity soccer match was still going on and RHS had a 4-0 lead in that.
The baseball game seemed evenly-matched at the point that it was called. The Eagles had scratched for single runs in the first and second innings, but then missed a golden opportunity when they left the bases full in the third. Riverheads scored its two in the top of the second when they led off the inning with back to back grounders right up the middle. The following batter attempted an unsuccessful bunt, leading to the guy on first being caught in a run-down. The Eagles seemed to have an easy out but the throw to second bounced off Tyler Smith's helmet into center field to score the first Gladiator run. Smith later scored from third to give RHS a brief 2-1 lead.
According to the Shenandoah District website, the teams will try again tomorrow, but in all honesty the forecast doesn't look any more promising then, or for RHS' big trip to Page on Friday. So there may be some frantic make-up scheduling over the final two weeks of the regular season.
I would assume that whenever this one is resumed, it will continue from the point where it left off, as opposed to starting from the beginning.
