Like everyone else across the state, Riverheads and the visiting Bath County Chargers and their fans brought out the ponchos tonight for a November-like game as the homestanding Gladiators sloshed their way to a season-opening 49-0 victory. Actually we got pretty lucky with the weather as it did not actually rain on us until maybe the last five minutes.

Still you could tell from the get-go that the field or at least the ball caused each team problems, as each one coughed up a fumble on its first possession. Riverheads was the first to lose the ball, setting the visitors up in fine shape around midfield, but instead of taking advantage, the Chargers almost immediately lost it themselves and they never really threatened again.

In fact the first quarter was especially rough on Bath as they lost a second fumble and had a punt blocked, enabling Riverheads to jump out to a 14-0 lead. The Big Red, as expected, unleashed a whole stable full of running backs as unofficially their seven touchdowns came from six different players.

After assuming control of the game, RHS tested the waters with their passing game. Starting QB Tyler Smith definitely seems to have the arm, and back-up Justin McWhorter shows promise as well, but the timing is just not there yet, so even though they threw 6-8 passes on their second-quarter drives, all three TDs still came on the ground as the teams went to the locker room with the Big Red ahead 35-0.

The 2000 State Championship team, a number of whom were in attendance, were among the honorees for this year's Hall of Fame class, which was saluted at halftime. That team was the only Riverheads team in school history to have an undefeated season, as they finished 14-0. The Gladiators other three state title teams (2006, 2010, and 2016) were each 13-1.

The running clock came into play for the entire second half, which probably suited most of the fans just fine, given the weather conditions, and the Big Red added a single touchdown in each quarter. As the game wound down, everyone got into the game, including a stretch by a third quarterback, Drew Bond, who is generally a receiver.

The Gladiator TDs came from Dalton Jordan, who scored twice, with single scores added by Jackson Shover, Devin Morris, freshman Zac Smiley, Blake Smith, and Thomas Hepstall. Once again this season, Coach Casto appears to have successfully recruited a kicker from the soccer team, as sophomore Peyton Skillman was a perfect 7 for 7. If he continues to kick like that for the rest of this season and two more, there will be a spot in the record books for him when all is said and done.

Coach Casto seemed pleased in the post-game interview, and the Gladiators will certainly be a force to reckon with this year. Yes, there were some clock management issues and some penalties that kept it from being a "perfect" game, but those can be attributed to the combination of the weather, being the first game of the season, and the constant shuffling in and out of players.

Most of those issues will likely be straightened out in time for next week's big showdown at the Draft. I personally will miss that one, so I hope someone else will step in for me and write a nice review on it. The Big Red then returns home for a date with East Rock on the 15th, another team that sounds like it means business this year.

I remember watching that 2000 team play, as King William played Honaker in the first game and I stuck around for the Riverheads game as well. Their opponent that day if I'm not mistaken was Bath County as well

Hey longtimerhsfan! I always enjoy your excellent game summaries!

Next week sounds interesting with the Draft showdown. Maybe Gunz41 and Redpride can share their thoughts!

I did not want to disagree with Matthew on the rankings when he placed George Wythe ahead of Riverheads since others were already doing so. Matthew and staff doing an outstanding job and I like his analytical, well thought out approach to rankings.

However, when GW had a major scare with Radford last week, it seemed fairly obvious that GW was not on the elite level just yet with Riverheads and a few select others imo. The FC loss really illustrated that point (great job to FC, I know they are big rivals with GW).

State Top 3

1- Riverheads
2- Sussex
3- Essex

The next three may be Galax, Northumberland, George Wythe

You must be one brave soul! I remember to this day how bitterly cold it was that day down in Lynchburg, so for you to be willing to stick around for a second game, you must REALLY love your football!

You are correct that it was Bath County that we played that day. That season was the beginning of a four year stretch of amazing success for the Chargers, most of it revolving around a quarterback named Jake Phillips, who would go on to play for William and Mary. In the year we are speaking of, he was only a freshman and the Gladiators beat them twice. I am not sure but those may have been Bath's only losses that season.

The next year, 2001, Riverheads won again in the regular season, but Bath went all the way and captured the state title themselves in Phillips' sophomore season. The following two years, Phillips led Bath to undefeated regular seasons, but in one of those years they lost their first or maybe second playoff game and the other year they went into the state final at 13-0 but lost. I believe that was to Sussex Central but don't quote me.

What made those final two years even more exciting for Charger fans was that Jake's younger brother, John, came along as his favorite receiving target. Not only did they click in high school, but John is still active in the pros, as he is now with the Saints, after time spent with the Cowboys and the Chargers.
Quite an accomplishment for someone from such a small school. I am ashamed to say this, but I am only about 95% certain he played his college ball at UVa. Can anyone verify that for me?

I agree with what Xcross said. Until three to four games in, most teams aren't what they will become.

I will be at the game in Draft and will give an attempt at recapping but in all fairness, I realize that I won't come close to capturing a game like Longtime does.

My guess is a very close game again this year that could come down to the final minutes. SD has ample weapons and their D will be very solid. Line play will be the key as in most Shenandoah District games.

I can't wait but part of me is disappointed this isn't later in the year so the teams have time to reach their potential before meeting. Either way it should provide for another entertaining game for fans in the area. As always, RollPride

Well I was on cloud nine after the state title win by KW and wasn't ready to leave. Lol. Yes it was bitterly cold, but the week before when KW went to Buffalo Gap in the state semis was worse, because it was played in a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain and was also bitterly cold. Not to mention the driving conditions that day weren't the best. But yes I do love my football. That's why it really stinks that I am not coaching anywhere this year.
