Good job to WM for a classic football game. Lots of momentum changes and coaching adjustments. Could have gone either way. Was super pumped to see the home side of Salem Stadium almost at capacity. with Glenvar fans I think it holds 7,000 so that would be at least 6,500 and around 3,000 for WM.

My Glenvar boys proved to me they were the team to beat this year after getting healthy and winning big at Giles. I knew they were good but learned at Giles they were great. Giles, Nottoway, and Wilson all play the same type of running game and they pretty much shut them all down. Although the offense sputtered at times in the 2nd half, they did what they had to do to win and the defense played lights out tonight. WM only scored 1 offensive touchdown all game plus the pick six.

Glenvar's running game scored the first 2 touchdowns by running up the middle against the number one ranked defense in the state so I hope that all those on here that said Glenvar had no run game will recognize that now. Glenvar didn't pass much tonight and I thought they could have done more successfully on that last drive especially but no argument from me...probably afraid of another pick six.

Finally...looking forward to next year already. Glenvar has a very good group back with almost all the skill players and many of the best players from the lines. They will have a bulls eye on them next year. Was happy to see so many former players come out and support the team who left it all on the field over the years. I think this group stood on your shoulders and made us all proud tonight.

Yes but it was set up by great drive with all run plays Wilson couldn't stop. The TD pass was a great call because the defense was expecting run. There have been posts on here that said Glenvar had no run game and I would say both drives were pretty much all run. That was my point.

22 for you guys is a hoss!

Be proud of your team. They played a great game. It was a great atmosphere

I was hoping that giles would win it again this year but when glenver beat them a few weeks back I am glad that glenver was able to win state says alot about the 3 rivers. Congrats to glenver on a great season

I think Hampton roads has esp, he knows who is going to win before they even play, 2 great games were played today in salem, both games went down to the wire and 1 in overtime, both heartbreaking losses, but no teams have nothing to be ashamed of, for Essex I believe 3 years in a row which is hard enough to get to, but hard to lose and they lost to a talented AltaVista team lead by thornhill he is a 1 man wrecking crew, and a hard loss for Wilson with having over 20 seniors, but they left it all on the field, glenvar has some tough brusier style rbs and a good little qb who can pass and run when he needs to, so overall 2 great games on a cold windy day in salem which effected some of the kicking game, GO BIG RED

How many seniors does Wilson graduate? I saw something the other week about 24 and then something this week about 18. Either way I think this was the year Wilson could do it. Going to be tough going forward.

Congrats to Glenvar but would u please stop with the after getting healthy and two key players out every time to talk about the Glenvar lose. If that's what u continue to need to tell yourself after that beat down then go ahead. Would not have mattered on that night, let it go. Your state camps

Well deserved congratulations!

You have to beat the best to be the best. Glenvar did that. Beating Union, Giles, Nottoway, and Wilson in straight weeks is no easy task. Clearly, Glenvar is the best 2A team in the state.

All right singlewinger...just for you I'll put that one back in the closet. Can't wait until the Giles game at Glenvar next year. Hopefully a G team from the Three Rivers will take it next year again. Great to see some Giles people and players at the game today.

I am jealous of all of you! After going through the entire season and planning for weeks ahead to attend both games today, I just had to sit them out because my tired old body told me that I just couldn't make it. Lousy time to get whatever it is that I have picked up.

Because of missing the games entirely, I only know what I have read so therefore I won't add anything else. Other than to say that if I couldn't make it down there, the least these four teams could have done was to have two dull and boring games instead of two all-time classics!

Congrats to all four teams for making it to that stage today!

Congratulations to Glenvar on winning their first football championship! Before 2009 Roanoke County had never won a football title, now they've won 3 in 6 years with 2 different teams.

I think the whole Stadium seats just over 7,000. The home side probably seats close to 5,000 and the visitors side around 2,000. Wish I could have seen Glenvar but I was in Lynchburg for the Salem game.

Who would have thought several weeks ago after Giles beat Glenvar 33-0 that Glenvar would basically return the favor on Giles 35-0 & go on to win it all?

After today, 9 out of the last 10 state champs from 2A (Div 2) was a school that had a G on their helmet. This makes the 5 straight year with a G.

Even more trivia, 11 out the last 13 started with a G, and Gretna with 3 titles, Giles, Gate City, and Goochland with 2 titles.

Last bit of trivia about today's game... Wilson did not get away from the curse of red team from the past few years... One of the assistant coaches at Glenvar is the former Goochland Def Cord.

Congrats to both teams on a great season.

Slept on this game before posting...opinion didn't change much....both teams played a sloppy game.......if either of these two teams had played this bad in the playoffs they wouldn't have been playing yesterday.....as far as games go it started out like Glenvar would win with ease....and could have....but then they kept screwing it up....not trying to start an argument but that game did not look like a championship game.....been to many of them....maybe it was nerves or the cold or whatever...and WM not kicking the field goal was just stupid....maybe Glenvar goes down and punches it in and you lose,,,but you have to take that chance with them going into the wind....I just know it was sloppy....good atmosphere followed by two teams not playing at the level they were capable of playing at....turned out to be a competitive good game...but....didn't look like a state championship game.....Congrats to all....see yall in August..........GO GILES

First off congrats to Glenvar on winning. Now onto the meat of what I want to post. There are several posts on here that have ongoing fueds between Wilson and Riverheads fans. As an ardent supporter of RHS football I am disappointed in the amount of "talk" that we have been involved in during this week. I have stated to Trevor quite literally I would never root for another team from our area. I also have been vocal about the respect I have for their D, especially the LB's and DB's. I know the loss was heartbreaking and has a sting that won't go away for a while maybe never. The things accomplished by the senior class can't be ignored so to them I say, great job in defining for yourself what and who you are as a program. As for longevity, time will tell whether it's truly a culture change or if it was based an amazing collection of athletes that hit at one time.
There are a few things that I can say about HS football in this area. 1) Riverheads has been on a significant roll for well over a decade. 2) Buffalo Gap had a mini run for about 6 years and has a phenomenal assistant coach in Rod Bowers. This should help get them back to winning consistently. 3) Wilson has turn around a dormant program and made football mean something for a school that typically had been a baseball school. There are other side notes on Waynesboro's run under former Wilson coach McDaniel. The ever present potential for Lee to turn out another star athlete. The continual plodding of the SD program down a path that just meanders right around mediocre. Finally the Fort Defiance program in a somewhat continual state of rebuilding. There is good football played here and based on fan support we are very blessed. I applaud all of these young men that come out every Friday night to put on a show for us.

Congrats again to Glenvar on winning and to Wilson for making the state championship game.

Wilson defense was not all you said it would be. Glenvar was moving the ball with ease through the air and on the ground. The blatant block in the back was a bogus call when Manns scored from 60 yards. Also, it's common curiosity to kneel when a player is hurt. Wilson players showed no class today.

everyone seen the block in the back....wasn't bad....but happened....wouldn't have affected the play....glenvar player should have pulled up....wasn't much bad sportsmanship but saw a couple things both ways....but not much at all....you won...let it go//////GO GILES

Wow, u put 14 points on them in regulation and still no respect for their D. I was not at the game but having seen them play several times, I know their D is above average. As for not kneeling, again I couldn't say but I agree it is generally an accepted practice to kneel when a player is injured.

Cmon man. No class b/c they didn't take a knee???? Where in the "courtesy handbook" or the "sportsmanship guide" is that stated? What a ridiculous comment.

The block in the back was a stupid play on your players part. Ten yards behind the play and he shoved him. Clearly against the rules

Our players on the field did kneel. Not at first but once they realized the situation they did.

Were you blind to #2 clearly taking cheap shots on our QB?

You guys made one more play than us and because of it you are the state champions. Be happy! No need to nit pick

Kudos Red Pride! We should appreciate all of the young men that start the journey in early August and suit up on Friday nights in the fall! Some win, some lose, in the end they're all winners in my book!

Re: Were we at the same game?

Disagree gs89er...The stadium was on both sides was pretty full and the fans for both sides were into it all game. I've been to about as many state championship games as one could possible go to over the past 28 years and I've been to every Salem Spartan State Championship game until yesterday so I have some really good comparisons. This one had about as much drama, great plays, and penalties as any I've been to. There were major momentum shifts and coaching changes along with that. Even with Glenvar up 14-0 and driving you had to think that a great seasoned team like Wilson would find a way back and they did.

True...the quality of play and execution wasn't terrific on either side but that was primarily because of the swirling wind and down on the field it was much worse than in the stands which did contribute to a sloppy kicking game...... but hey that is "State Championship" playoff football in December. I thought both teams played and executed about as well as they could considering everything and the playoff "feel" was there IMO.

Re: Were we at the same game?

If you read my post it said great atmosphere followed by two teams that did not play up to what I thought should have been their potential....and I stick by that statement.....You guys shot yourself in the foot on 4 if not 5 different occasions...it was sloppy football....close and entertaining game....but sloppy....trust me if you guys had lost in the same fashion as you won, and everything else about the game were the same, you would be on here talking about those mistakes.....you won....close entertaining game...but it was a sloppy game by both teams.....esp Glenvar....truly think Glenvar could have won by 3 td's.....and were a play from losing it....that's the truth....If WM had kicked the fg and you guys drove down the field and lost you would be here agreeing with me....like I said....good entertaining game...but not well executed by either team.....GO GILES
