The Granby Comets pulled a mild upset handing Albemarle only their second loss of the season with a thrilling 71-69 win at the 9th Annual Virginiapreps Classic. Antwan Epps led four Comets in double figures finishing with 22 points to earn game MVP honors.
The game went back-and-forth with both teams trading leads throughout the game. The matchup was a contrast in styles with Albermarle looking to go inside Epps had 13 points in the second half
Austin Katstra, who finished with a game-high 26 points and four dunks, was fouled on a layup and his free throw gave Albermarle a 48-43 lead with under a minute to go in 3rd quarter. A dunk by Katstra put Albermarle up 54-53 with 4:38 to go in the game.
Jeriah Sweat stepped up with his second big basket of the 4th quarter gives Granby a 60-56 lead. A steal and basket by Epps extends the Comets lead to 62-56. Jermiah Jenkins added two free throws to give Granby a 70-64 lead over Albermarle with 34 seconds to go.
After dominating inside, Katstra showed his range with a big three to slice the Granby lead to 70-67 with 13 remaining. Grandy turned the ball over giving Albermarle a chance to tie but Kastra's 3-point shot was in-and-out. Epps makes 1 of 2 of two free throws and Granby held on for a 71-69 win.
