Gretna and Appomattox thoughts ?

No reason to think that Appo/Gretna will be any different than Appo/WC. WC/Gretna played about even and Appo had little trouble with WC. I know like opponents is not always a true indicator but I think it probably is in this case. Appomattox 52 Gretna 14

Appo wins big with the junior players getting alot of game time again. No need to keep top dogs in the game and risk injuries. Therefore Gretna may score a few points but that's no big deal.

I'm guessing the Hawks had to change their britches after they found out the score Friday night.
They'll show up Friday night though with big thoughts of, "knocking of the Raiders", but unless the Raiders hand it to them I don't see the Hawks taking it.

It's scary to think Appo is that good, but they are. I don't know what "seeding" Gretna will get in their region according to the powerpoints, but last I seen them, they were fourth in their region. It's scary to think that Appo is that many points better (40 plus points) than the 4th or so ranked team, but they are. It's not a slight to the region either because that region is very tough. It kind of supports the prevalent thought of just how good Appo is.

Gretna is very young. Defense only has one senior, four juniors, and six sophomores. Offence has two seniors, four juniors, and five sophomores with no one going both ways. Has a couple on defense that play a little on offense. Have JV team that has only lost one game and that to Bartlet Yancey from NC that were twice bigger, even seen one take his helmet off at half time and had full beard. Kind of suspicious for a program that has never won over couple games a year for a decade including this season in NC. Still was just 14-8 loss. JV also went undefeated last year. The majority of this JV is 8th graders including qb and most skill positions with some freshman. Future looking bright in Gretna next few years.

I watched them against Altavista last week and listened some of the people saying gretna and altavista both had young teams. They should come along and be tough next few years.

Altavista qb is junior but running back and most recievers, especially the one that made all the plays, are seniors. Had alot of youth on roster but expect mostly because they could not field JV this year. Have friends with kids in youth league and had problems fielding enough kids for teams there. Thought their kids were not going to be able to play but finally got eleven before first games and that's the oldest age group. Not trying to knock them but do not understand why lack of interest especially just recently coming off two state titles. Same problems they had in early 2000's when they had to go independent.

Gretna has a kicker but not the caliber of Appo's. Like i said i watched them play this past thursday night at altavista. Altavista actually beat them on the field but choked too many times to get the win.

I will say Gretna will be Gretna next year. Loaded with young talent. I think Appomattox will dominate this game top to bottom. WC and Gretna both will be tough next year but niether matches up to the Raiders this year. 42-0 before the dogs are called off.

Appo wins with more talent.....like Gretna won with Vic and his gang. Talent shifts and it will happen to Appo just like Gretna, WC and Altavista has seen. Enjoy while you have it, because it will go the other way. Unless you recruit like LCA.

Agree, adding to that, coaching shifts occur and make huge differences. You are the quality of Appos coach. Same with Richlands coach. Having a solid coach and keeping him there are when we see teams that are very solid for a lot of time. If Appo's coach stays around a while longer, they will be in the.mix for many, many years. Same with Riverheads and same with Galax

I agree that good coaching can make a difference but winning State Titles takes talent...and schools seem to run in cycles with talent. Gretna had about 10 years of great talent come through and then it just dropped off. I’m hearing that it’s coming back, time will tell. The last 2 State Titles in Gretna were won with talent despite coaching. Coach moved on when he saw talent dropping off, he hasn’t won consistently since he left. Must be lacking talent. LOL

William Campbell is much improved from the last few seasons. Broggin is a tremendous coach, and has brought tons of excitement to that area. Losing Reid and Rosser will hurt them but I agree they will be good again. The only question I have is....I know the enrollment is down in Naruna and the county wants to go to a two high school setup. Will they keep the doors open very much longer at WC? I hope so, but you know how money talks etc..

Key to this game may be Gretna's passing attack. If Hawks go to the air , they can hang with Appomattox.

That's what Richlands thought last year! Oh and I forgot William Campbell thought the same thing.

I said at the beginning of the year and still say that Appo is the team to beat in Region C and the West.

When playing a good team, you have to score early and often, and match them touchdown for touchdown.

That's an interesting thought. If they go to a two high school system, will they combine Rustburg?WC and Brookville/Altavista?

There has been talk for years of Altavista and William Campbell combining, but no action has ever been taken other than "talk" (that I know of anyway).
They are pretty small schools for sure.

My understanding is what @Bo Bob said. The school board proposed a CC East and West with 2 new high school being built. One near Winfall area and one near the Timberlake area. The board of supervisors declined that proposal last I knew, but the school board is contending several buildings are older and in need of costly repair. Add in that the 2 smaller county schools have low enrollment it is not cost efficient the way it is now. Its a big change and still up in the air. They are all really good schools, but money will be a factor sooner than later

I agree with you, but wouldn't stop there. Add the East as well. Meaning, if its Appo is in the state title game, they are a heavy favorite vs the East as well, and rightfully so with their program running on all cylinders.

Good weather for Hawk hunting tonight. Let's just hope nobody gets hurt and we get to enjoy a good game.

I remember back when Gretna hosted Appomattox in the playoffs a few years back on a Saturday. Joe McGhee broke his leg early in the game and the ambulance was on the field and all of the stands were quiet. All of a sudden a fan from the Appomattox side yells "Get him off the field!!!!" and I've never been a fan of Appomattox since then. Always glad to see state titles come back to the Dogwood but never rooted for the Raiders since then.

WOW! Sorry that happened! Not what we are about I can assure you.
In fact. Last night at the JV game I was trying to root for the boys and pay attention to my neighbors little girl at the same time. I thought the team was on a time out and just off to the side. I turned my attention back to the game and yelled for the Defense. It was then I realized that their was a Hawk laying on the field.
I FELT LIKE A TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who won the JV game?

20-7 Gretna was up.
Appo won 25-20. Scoring with seconds to go.

I am sorry that happened and I can assure you 100 percent that is not what we as Appomattox fans approve of in any way. So I do apologize to you and all in attendance for the one bad apple.

I can say our players dropped to their knee and prayed when the Edmonson fella at Dan River got hurt along with most of gthe appo fans praying in the bleachers.

Yes you did and last year when Graves went down it was nice seeing the teams come together. Football is a fraternity that only 90% of the folks really get. There are bad apples in every bunch.
