Tunstall is very bad unfortunately and it’s not all on the kids. They have some good athletes but they don’t have a winner’s mentality or winning culture. Losing David Potts a few years back hurt that program big time.Is Tunstall that bad? Not downing Gretna in anyway but I know from the chat on here they are down from last year so I'm a bit surprised to see the "if Tunstall can eliminate TO can it be competitive".
That is tough!Tunstall is very bad unfortunately and it’s not all on the kids. They have some good athletes but they don’t have a winner’s mentality or winning culture. Losing David Potts a few years back hurt that program big time.
Tunstall is the best school, academically, in southern VA. The school pulls from the highest socioeconomic area in the area. Their baseball program is second to none and they invest A LOT of time and money into their athletic facilities. Most of the Goodyear transfers who come to Danville’s plant (from all around America) send their students to Tunstall. I’m a graduate of Tunstall and my experiences there definitely made me the man I am today. My thing with Tunstall is they’re way too loyal to coaches who they shouldn’t be and 9.9 times out of 10 it’s a detriment to the student athletes. After Potts (engineered Tunstall’s 2012 state semifinal team as defensive coordinator and took over as Head Coach in 2014) resigned a few years ago after taking that program to places they hadn’t been in a while, I was hoping they’d get a winner for their program. GW went out and got Jimmy Teague (10+ state championship appearances and 7 rings at Reidsville) and Nick Anderson (current head coach and state championship appearance at Kinston) and Dan River got Ferrell Edmunds (University of Maryland legend; NFL Pro Bowler), Tunstall needed to make a splash. They originally hired a 2x state champion coach from Magna Vista and retracted the offer for an in-house guy who hasn’t done anything at all. It’s very unfortunate. Tunstall has some really good kids and they have a lot of athletes in that part of the county (I will say on the same scale as GW/Appomattox/Magna Vista/etc.) but player development is almost non existent in that program. No way should they be getting “running clocked” by GW and Magna Vista with the size and athletes they have. Politics in programs are real! I’m hopeful they get it turned around for the kids’ sake. That is tough!
I remember back in the late 90’s battling the same there in Altiavista. Football was down and basketball was up. Same athletes would battle for balls on the court and then
do the opposite on the field.
Those 0-10 years were tough!
There is the major travesty in your last sentence.Politics in programs are real! I’m hopeful they get it turned around for the kids’ sake.
Did you see the article in paper last week. Coach spent paragraph talking about how dominate Wing T is and Gretna should have always ran it, they would have been more dominate. Then he calls out a booster member in special message it said. I had to chuckle but mostly sad. Never seen a coach act so ignorant in paper and also can't believe they printed it. What a sad state he has put the once dominate program. Even having the nerve to say our past coaches with state rings should have ran his Wing T. Of course if you change offenses and have no success you can bet you going to hear it from communityTunstall beat Gretna 14-0, according to what I saw in Lynchburg paper. I guess Gretna "ran ball up the middle" 40 times, and Tunstall stopped them.
