I will probably look this up on the VHSL website, but I thought I would ask you guys in the meantime.

I know that in our East Region, tonight (Tuesday the 11th) the four conference champions will be hosting the four conference runners-up. Those match-ups have Madison at Riverheads, Wilson at Luray, Bluestone at Bruton, and Maggie Walker at Goochland. So after tonight, four teams will be eliminated.

I assume that the same type thing is going on in the West region.

After tonight, in the East, the four remaining ones then tangle on Thursday in the regional semi-finals and then on Saturday night, the two teams that have survived will play for the Regional Championship. I do know that our half of the region (Conference 35/36) will be the host team for that final.

So that means that after Saturday night, there will be two teams left in the East Region and two in the West. So here is my question. Do all four of those then advance to the state tournament and if so, is that next week at VCU?

Last year, the two teams in each regional championship game went to the state tournament. RE Lee was the runner up in the regionals (to Luray) and they played eventual state champion and top seed in the west Gate City in the state semi final the next week. I would assume that the format will be the same this year where four teams come out of regional play (2 from each side), and cross-bracket for the semis, but hey, I have been wrong before lol.

After I posted my question, I checked the VHSL website and here is my understanding.

Yes, the top two in each region (East and West) do advance to the state tournament. So to put it another way, there is a State Final Four in volleyball.

However, apparently only the state final will be played at VCU. The state semi-finals will actually be hosted by the two regional champions. They will of course cross-bracket, meaning that the East Champion will host the West Runner-up, and the West Champion will host the East Runner-up. Since we already host state semi-finals in football, I guess that shouldn't be too hard a concept to embrace.

Anyway, those two state semi-finals will be held next Tuesday night the 18th at 7:00, and the state championship at VCU will be on Saturday the 22nd at 1:00. There will be the usual day of multiple state title games, beginning with the 1-A girls game at 11:00.

There will even be some boys championship games at the higher classifications. I am not sure at what level boys start playing volleyball in this state, but at the 1A and 2A levels, it is not offered.

So as of the moment, there are 16 girls teams left at the 2-A level, but tonight they start eliminating one another. May the best teams advance!

Riverheads/Madison County

Riverheads moves on to play Goochland on Thursday with a 3-1 win over Madison. Roll Pride!

Re: Riverheads/Madison County

This match-up featured two teams who had each posted unbeaten regular seasons and appeared to be on a collision course for the regional title game later in the week. But Luray's upset over the Lady Mounties Saturday night in the Conference 35 title game instead sent the Mounties to RHS tonight in a quarter-final elimination game.

In game one, Madison scored the first three points but RHS went on a tear to score 14 of the next 16 and move ahead 14-5. The Mounties rallied to keep it close before the Lady Gladiators closed it out 25-20.

Game two featured the Mounties leading most of the way. However, Riverheads rallied and forged ties at 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 before the visitors pulled away again to take a 25-22 win.

Starting with Game Three, you could see the Lady Gladiators wearing the visitors down. They led most of the way and I think the final was either 25-17 or 25-18.

In the deciding game four, the Mounties fell apart in the opening moments and made several mental mistakes, likely due to fatigue, enabling RHS to jump ahead 8-1. They were able to maintain and extend that lead and closed out the match 25-14.

If there was one factor that may have determined the game, it was serving. The Mounties had consistent trouble getting it over the net and came up short at least 6-8 times on the night. In fact with RHS leading 24-14 in game four, the victory was clinched on a Mounties net serve.

As CmonVT says, the Gladiators move on to the semi-final Thursday night at Goochland. If they can win that one, they will host the regional final Saturday night, but more importantly clinch a berth in the state Final Four.

As for Madison, great season as I think they finished 24-2.

Correction to an earlier post......it was Riverheads' Austin Tomlin, not Austin Smiley, who had sung the national anthem earlier. He did so again tonight.

Re: Riverheads/Madison County

The only fatigued was having the official call double hit after double hit on MC's All district setter and BRD POY; 8 times in first set alone. Never have seen an official so completely alter a sporting event.

Re: Riverheads/Madison County

I have never completely understood that particular rule and when it happens and when it doesn't, so I can't help you there. But I do know it was called quite a bit that night. There are a number of calls in volleyball that will leave me wondering what happened.
