Just back over from reading the GW/Giles thread on SWVA site. Man they still hate the coach in Wytheville. Not sure I agree with at least one point made. The question was asked when was the last time GW beat a team they shouldn’t have. I came down and witnessed them come back and beat a damn good Radford team in 2015, 35-28 in the waining seconds of the game. They were outclassed the entire day by the QB/RB combo that Radford had. IMHO they shouldn’t have won that game based solely on what I seen that day. For the record, I couldn't begin to tell you whether he is a good coach or not, but the fan base there seem to despise him. I bet he enjoys coming to work there and hearing the “love”. This years team are not world beater but they aren’t bottom dwellers either so with some patience and execution they will be in the hunt for the Region.

Giles has been talked about being young and a year or two away. I wouldn’t sleep on them but so much though. The wing is nasty when executed and most teams don’t face anything remotely close to it so it is that much more effective when it’s clicking. Watch out when this group hits their stride, there could be a lot of unhappy people hearing a train horn while getting handled on the field.

Keep following that thread once I get off I'm going to post something that should help people see why he is hated. And yes he has about 3 good quality wins during his time at GW. But I'll prove he is out classed as a head coach his record literally speaks for itself. Sure he's won 70% of the games he's coached but against who? Just how many teams with actually winning records has he beaten? Out of those winning teams how many had quality wins during that season? What's good record against say Galax or Radford? The proof is there folks just need to see it there is tons of film from 2014-now to prove he isn't meant to be the head coach. And watch when Graham, Galax, Grayson and RR roll into wytheville he'll prove it again. Especially against Graham and Galax both should be able to hang 60+ on us without much trouble.

That may be more telling as to the overall downturn in football in that area though. Outside of Galax and Chilhowie in the past 8 years, who from south of Roanoke have truly been contenders in Single A? I would say most teams would like to consistently beat most teams they play, ie 70% wins. I think it’s a bit of a reach to saddle yourself with the record against Galax as the telling factor of whether a coach is good or not. With Dixon in place they were a machine and just kept building on their success so there’s no shame in not beating that team.

Maybe you should apply for the job...I seriously doubt you would win 70% of your games no matter who you play

Maybe just Maybe the talent level has dropped off some, we hear every year about how dominant they're going to be and when they lose one game we hear how they will be lucky they will be to win 2 or 3 games and how terrible the coach is. There was a thread on the other board before the Radford game about how they would put it on the bobcats and now they're saying they will be lucky to win a few games. I don't buy it i still think they're are decent team with a decent coach but I've been wrong before and I will be again.

Exactly....sounds like expectations in wytheville are just a tad bit high for some of their fan base

In 2015 they gave Riverheads a great semifinal game losing I think 28 - 21 somewhere along those lines. Take Riverheads out of the equation since then and that leaves you with Galax during those years besides the one stellar year that Chilhowie had and GW just happens to be in the same region as Galax or they would have many more semi final appearances. GW has probably been a top three or four team in single A since 2015. Alot of teams would love to be able to claim that!!!? So they are a very successful program in those terms.

Now with that being said some of the criticism is very valid. Their coach does tend to get caught up in his tendencies on offense. Some one stated on that board that it's because of talent as to why that core group of plays that he repeatedly runs no longer works.
To that I say you are correct but as a coach you have to adept to your talents. Dixon for years had a massive Oline and a stud running back to run power football. But the past few years he had to adapt to the spread because of the talent and strengths he had. He no longer had the massive line to line up and just pound the ball you have to adapt to your strengths and weaknesses. Now it is still vitally important that you still coach the proper techniques. Galax probably averages 50 pounds less across the line in the past few years compared to the past but yet still win most battles against much bigger opponents.

The other criticism is the lack of defensive adjustments in game. There is no way around it, this is facts.

On adapting to your talent, I will have to disagree on that. Casto has run the same 4 formations for close to 25 years no matter who he has on the field and has been fairly successful with it. He believes less is more. I have seen him call the exact same play 7 to 8 times in succession. Chilhowie had 2 great years with back to back championship appearances.

Offenses such as Giles and Riverheads which are based off of deception and based on getting massive amounts of bodies to a certain point of attack I will grant you that but outside of that I completely disagree. As far as chilhowie they had a really good team the second year. The first year was more about catching a couples of team who had some devastating Injurys at the right time. They still deserved to be there but was not the best team from the west.

wasn't Riverheads a heavy wishbone scheme for years. Then they switched to what they are running now? As far as calling the exact same play many times in a row. Hell if it works it works. Hell Dixon ran off tackle left a whole quarter against Riverheads in 2015 with that big back they had.

Wing T, Double Wing Tight and some Single Wing Concepts but not in the conventional formation for pretty much Casto the entire time at Riverheads if I am not mistaken. Terminology aside since people call things different it is all about deception and getting more blockers than the defense can handle at the point of attack like the other poster pointed out.

You've also got to look we played in the hogo for years in the 90s and early 2000s it's wasn't a bad district. But after that it went to hell quickly. So most have said GW plays an easy schedule anyway so if it's easy who has he actually beaten? Outside of a very few quality wins he has only won the games he was supposed to win. If you look at the 50/50 games he has a losing record if you look at the underdog games he has a losing record. And if you look at the good teams we should've beat he has losing record. I'd say close to 60% of that 70% over winning record is against sub .500 teams. I didn't get it posted last night but I will today the proof is there be it on film or on paper it's there all you have to do is look.

You keep thanking that the talent GW has on a regular basis for the last 25 years or so hasn't been sub .500 ever. So the kids alone but you a 60% win rate overall so that extra 10% wouldn't be that hard. Go take a look at what the previous 3 coaches GW has had we're able to do.

The talent level hasn't dropped I want to be clear on that our size is down. What has really dropped is the numbers most of GW talent is walking the halls because they will not play for him. Most of these kids I know personally hell one of GW current best players father has been a family friend my whole life. I'm a little more in the know than you think and I can tell you these kids are ready for a change. And so is 99% of the GW fan base.

I'll give it to if we were in D we be in the semifinals basically every year. And sure I'm gonna get crap over this but oh well D is terrible. Sure they've had some damn good teams but as a whole it's bad most every year they are embarrassed by the other semifinalist teams. And yeah top 3 or 4 is amazing for a long period but it's not that impressive when that's what you're supposed to do. The talent he has had under Dixon has 3+ tittles easily.

If the talent is just walking around the halls then yes the talent level has dropped on the football team. I still believe they're a pretty good football team year in and year out. All teams have a drop off in talent from time to time.

What I mean is there is a TON of talent that will not play for him. The team is still full of talent but you guys will see this year just by what some teams are able to do to us how bad he is lacking. His defense is horrible like the worst it could be Graham will hang 70+ if they want to.

No doubt they deserved to be there no question. But what happened when they faced a legit contender? D just isn't what I used to be in the Powell valley days.
