Mostly everyone statewide, and a lot of you guys on here still feel they are the team to beat in 1A, What makes GW a top team?

Imo RH or Sussex has been #1 from go you can't be the man until you beat the man. But the reason GW is so highly looked at is our level of talent. Really not many teams on this side of the state in 1A can compare in that category. I'll get heat for this but if someone from D doesn't come on EXTREMELY! hard the region C winner will be in Salem. And GW is the favorite in C PM has the potential to be right there but they haven't show anything yet I say YET. And Galax is always a real threat but many think they are down this season in talent and line play. Some feel that way about GW but that's not the case even with us losing 3 starters to transfer or simply not playing. We still have 3 6'4 280+ starting linemen back and 2 extremely capable replacements. And at WR where we lost EJ Horton and Walker Nowers 1 to transfer and 1 who chose not to play. We still have 4 to 5 really good WRs. And imo why most are high on us is our backfield. We have a 3rd year QB 2 burners in Sawyers and Brown and then we have a legit TANK in Landon Thompson. With Ravon Wells who is Scrappy Wells little brother. It cannot be disputed that all the talent we need is well in place. At this point we don't look like we should because of youth, mistakes and just plain and simple horrible cosching. I know I know "but you've bitched about cosching for 3 years now" yes I have but now it's honestly gonna show. We aren't as deep we aren't as big and we aren't as fast. So the coaching will get you beat in close games. Like last night FC was simply better prepared and better coached it is that simple. Last night FC was the better team no other way about it. But if GW can fix the mistakes of young players and poor management we will win the region. But only time will tell.
I feel the O line is the best part of the team. All these other guys are unproven. They don't even use LT right. It just like last night they had #2 returning punts but he ever returned one, not sure he knew why he was out there. So basically PM, Narrows, Galax, and Chilhowie are the teams to beat for GW to reach Salem
They have so many unproven players.
The first team all-state receiver made the second team all regional QB, that is just how it is.

I think they are all able to produce in high volume. But I think it will take either what happened last night to wake them up like always with GW. We always need that 1 loss to get better. 2012 Floyd, 2014 Radford, 2015 Galax it alway takes them 1 loss. Or it will take a blowout win to show them what they can actually do. As you said those 3 have never really had to step up cause we've always had so much. This year they have to or it won't work. And I couldn't agree more about Charlie that kid is a monster! I honestly think we will be fine this year. Marion will be a good test and Galax will be. But the remaining games should be walkoffs. And yes all that's in GW way of Salem os really PM and Galax. Of if we go 7-3 it's still in very real reach depending on Galax. I just really don't see any real threat to region C from any team in D.
I think they are on the top 4 in 1A easy. The talent alone is worth that. But it's possible they fall flat and get beat. I'd lean twords a pick up next week and a W with Galax being our only road block left after that. 7-3 to 9-1 is possible but I think they walk the dog on the rest of the schedule. And if the team comes together I think they make it to Salem without much trouble.
GW doesn't have anyone that can consistently catch the football and why the hell (our best runner) Thompson doesn't touch the ball is absolutely ludicrous. Also we don't have the speed on a wet field to run the jet sweep and actually FC probably has more speed than GW. With the size of our line and a wet field we should be running power.
That's almost poetic in nature lol I couldn't have said it better. Thompson needs to be fed the ball and let the other backs take the pressure off with carries. But idk if we have the play calling and vision needed to let him run.
You were right about FC and I said it before the season that Marion could be trouble. I think we will win next week but it's going to take a step up in effort from everyone involved. We can shut the run down with our massive D line and our LBs. And surprisingly our DBs have looked really good in spots. But like I said it's going to take a much better effort to win against Marion.
I think they lose to marion, and if I was coach I would have ran 32 up middle all night, not the deacon.
Here is how I see it, they lose to Marion, and Chilhowie 1-3 beat Auburn big, will win one late and lose the other, honaker or galax. galax is not the same as in the past. 3-4 They finish on the road in Grayson & home RR. lose one win one most likely at RR 5-5. Maybe they make some changes but I think they are what they are. beamer is not the same QB without nowers, he needed him last night i cant understand how they let that happen.

I just can't see them dropping that many. 8-2 is what I think our bottom is cause I feel if they get beat by Marion they won't get beat again until Salem. 9-1 is what I think they go but I've been wrong before. They will come together I think and imo 1A West is DOWN this year. From top to bottom but with this new format it let's on if them go to Salem and I think it off 1A on this side wr have more than anyone else.
It is hard to say on how good a team is at this point, because the most a team has played is twice, and any team can have an off night whether it be 1st game or last game. The only thing I really know about 1A is Riverheads and who is usually the top contenders. But everyone saying the one region is so far down makes it seem as though in the old format you would have a different ranking in the old format. If it is that bad, then C/D winner could have a down game and still win, and then anything is possible in 1 game for all the marbles. I can remember seeing on here a couple years ago that Galax had no chance against Riverheads with their 6-4 regular season.
I never pick a score for any game my team plays, but I ALWAYS pick them to win if they are in a pickem, you mean you don't pick your team to win? I think I remember you getting in arguments on here last year about your team and being so good? So youre saying blaster shouldn't have picked his team to win?
Nope sure didn't and I see you're still obsesed with my opinion. But you see unlike you no matter what happens in this world I'll always be able to say my team has won tittles. And if they donny win another one this year I'll still be all 9 losses with a smile on. Oh and on a side not you call my 21 punt prediction out but alot had us winning by more than 21. And I'll go ahead and say it you're only pissy because 99.9% on this and any other forum didn't think D has a single contender in it. Including the Rebbles

Region D has some pretty decent teams, and to write them ALL off now, is stepping out On a weak ledge. Its Riverheads and then everybody else in my opinion. I think Essex will be the team out of Region A. Wythe could easily be in the state title game though.
Last time I checked, Riverheads is number one in Class A until proven otherwise, and Sussex is right there and yes, so is GW because GW is well coached and balanced and raw. They have talent all over the field that is going to improve by leaps and bounds by seasons end. They will be a dramatically different team by season's end, and sure, every team improves by season's end, but you will see GW improve much more than other teams because of the talent, and the coaching. They are very well coached and are going to be in the thick of things come late Nov. Don't be fooled by Fort Chiswell. They are very good this year, but on any given night, they may play with the Salem Spartans for God's sake, then they could turn around and lose to Bland County. Throw everything out with Fort Chiswell and just pretend they didn't play GW. There is no reading this team. Keep in mind, Fort Chiswell has kind of always been the "little buddy" historically to George Wythe in football and basketball. For Fort Chiswell, the George Wythe game is their superbowl. They will be as sky high as they was for that game as they will be all season long. Again, no way to tell with FC. They could lose to Radford by 2 TD's next week. Watch and see the score come Friday night. As for Marion, they are actually and slightly, better than Fort Chiswell this year. Marion has its best team in many, many years, but GW will win the game. Even though Marion is a slightly better team than FC, GW will win the game by 7 points. Again, get Fort Chiswell out of your head. There is no reading that bunch.

This Marion football team just may be the best team the Canes have put on the field in several years. Marion
Is a senior lead team. They have experience up front on both sides of the ball. Their QB is very good, and their
RB'S run the ball very well. They will come right at you, and hit you. They capitalize on your turnovers.
They can run and throw the ball. They have good depth and size. I am not going to put them in the same jar
With Richlands and Union, just yet, but Marion can play folks. They will dress over 50 players, and play more than 15 to 20.
As far as weakness, not really sure. Nothing glares out at this point. I know they are 2A and in the Southwest
District. They had their way with a decent Northwood school, and beat Chilhowie at Chilhowie. Marion will be in most games this year. Virginia High, Graham , and Richlands Will give them a tough game, as will GW. I just don't see 1A schools beating them, but again you never know. GW will be tough, and maybe a toss up game. It all depends on how much of that GW youth shows, IMO.

I don't see how you could say GW is well coached. They are not. Marion will beat GW by 10.
If GW is the number 1 team in 1A, I wish The Fort could've stayed one more year. LOL!!
I honestly mean no disrespect by my post. And yes it is a bold statement that I made. And I understand we're only in week 2 but in my mind anyway I just don't know if I see a real threat. Chilhowie will be fine this year and PH has some bright spots. But other than those 2 teams I really just don't see it. But again I've been wrong before and will be again.
Guess time will tell but if I remember right last year they were being crowned early in the season and Galax and Sussex had no chance of defeating their size and speed. From what I seen at the Pulaski jamboree they were not that impressive but I understand you can't take that much away from those games but that's all I've seen them. I could see them running the table in the regular season but I could also see a couple of losses if some teams come together play them tough. Guess what I'm saying is don't count your chickens before they hatch.
Everything you said is true no question but I've always said it they need one loss to wake up. But we will see they might go 1-9 if so I'll be there for every loss.
