Being a product of the City of Petersburg, this story moved me. The story centers on a former QB for Peabody High School. Peabody was the high school for Black residence of Petersburg until 1969. Certainly, it was absolutely not true that the schools were separate but equal, but Peabody had its own identity and was and is respected for the quality of the education they provided. And their athletic teams, especially their football teams enjoyed tremendous notoriety over the years. I’m sure this gentleman, along with his teammates, enjoyed re-living their football years many, many times throughout their lifetimes. I never knew him, but by being nicknamed after Joe Namath, “Hollywood Joe”, he must have been an exciting player and a fan favorite.
I’m hoping that the fellow that provides us with fourseasonsfootball.com will one day be able to find enough records to include Peabody High School in his listings.
