Hermitage 9, Varina 0 Final

I tried to find it on YouTube, per Tim, but never could.

Sloppy game, looked like a scrimmage. Defenses looked decent, offenses have work to do.
Mike don’t know what game you watched. Defenses looked decent? Come on man! Varina has 5 D2 or better athletes on D and Herm forced what 5 TOs? Herm’s D line and secondary is legit. Salem wouldn’t have scored on either team tonight! None the less, 804 football is looking real good this year. Congrats to Dave Bedwell on his first win after a 5 year hiatus.

It was a first game with no scrimmages or a benefit. Given the circumstances, I expect that to a certain degree. It will take a couple of games to smooth things out.

No doubt! I expected a shootout myself. Varina probably has the best returning QB in 5A (I believe Maury’s QB is back as well) and Dunn just couldn’t do anything last night. Varina’s front 7 was nasty and they’re actually bigger and a little faster on defense than they were last year believe it or not.

IS VARINA D5 OR D4///I also thought it looked more like a scrimmage game
D5. They don’t go D4 until next year. Your boys couldn’t score last night but they’re going to be fine. Had it been 28-21, folks would be saying great game lol.. Offense puts people in the stands, defense wins games and apparently makes games look like scrimmages LOL...I agree that it was scrimmage like, but both defenses had some pure dogs on it.

Do you think they are both better than Bo Kite from Deep Run? I believe he faces Highland Springs in 2 weeks.

I stand corrected. Bo Kite is the real deal. Bobby Dunn and Gibson threw the ball a lot last year, Kite did it all. I believe that Varina, Deep Run, Herm and HS are the best 804 Class 5 teams. Manchester will be very good but they’ll make the playoffs simply because all of the Henrico schools will beat up on one another. Either Deep Run or Varina will miss the playoffs more than likely. Both play one another (Deep Run still has Herm) and then have to play Highland Springs. Deep Run actually plays HS, Varina, and Herm 3 weeks straight. Ouch! Glen Allen is going to make some noise too.

Yeah, I became a Glen Allen fan after seeing how the head & assistant coaches operate in fall 2019 at a game. These guys came across to me as teachers, not like some of the “meatheads” you sometimes encounter in HS coaching. Saw a GA assistant coordinate with the visiting band director to make sure their pregame warmups didn’t impede the band’s pregame show. Little stuff like that impresses me because I’ve seen it go down differently at other schools. Seems like a good culture being built there under their young HC.

GA/Herm is going to be very good in a few weeks. GA has a big one with Freeman on Saturday. I agree, I have a lot of respect for GA’s staff. They are building something great.

I take the statement of Varina being bigger this year back (Ford was 6’3 275 and Terry was 6’6 235) but I do believe their linebacking corps is the best in 5A. Jailen Walker going to JMU and Goldie going to Apprentice School. Lots of speed and athleticism.

I think I would put Manchester in the top 4 IMO. Also, another one to be on the lookout for on the low is Clover Hill. They have a couple of real deal college ball players and a lot of nice other pieces. Plus two solid QB's. They have size and a pass rush which is nice to have in class 5. Also, Can Prince George make any noise? I think they return a lot from last year. Just someone else to keep in our rear-view as the season progresses.

I thought Hermitage and Varina looked good given they may have only had 10 total practices bc of snow etc. If Hermitage and Varina can get a good passing game going, now we are talking. We know a Bedwell team WILL be able to pound the rock without question as that is a non-negotiable. Looks like Hermitage has plenty of athletes to throw to as well. Just gotta get it going and continually improve as we progress week after week. I'll wait a couple of weeks before I make any sweeping statements. Hermitage success in the air could mean the difference between a team that is solid verses can make a deep run (no pun intended). One thing I was impressed with by both Hermitage and Varina is they both did a good job stopping the run. One thing my Chiefs have seemed to struggle with the last few years.

I’ve been living in Henrico too long LOL!! I feel like I never give the Chesterfield guys love but you’re exactly right. I was reading the Dominion District’s preview today and I said, DAMMMMN Manchester is loaded! They have about as much depth on the lines as most college teams. Though I believe Hermitage’s Nigel James is the best RB in the 804, Manchester’s transfer from LC Bird has 22 D1 offers. That’s why the 804 is the best area for high school sports in VA, players all over the place. Clover Hill is going to be good as well, just kind of sucks that only the top 4 goes cause they’ll probably be on the outside looking in.

I do believe that Hermitage could go undefeated in the regular season haven beaten Varina already. Deep Run has to play HSHS, Varina, and Herm. But that leaves only 2 teams that could go undefeated out of those 4 teams. Herm and HSHS seem most likely 3 days into the season.

Let's go to the southside... Manchester could very well go undefeated but they have to play Bird and Clover Hill who are also class 5. Monacan also plays all three and is in division 4. A Monacan win against any of the above 3 will really hurt their playoff chances. It is possible that Manchester or Clover Hill are undefeated but it can only be one due to head-to-head play. It is also possible that the other is 5-1 or 4-2. I don't know if you will make it at 4-2.

If Hermitage goes 6-0, HSHS goes 6-0, let's say Clover Hill goes 6-0. Now we have a mess. Prince George could be 5-1, DEEP RUN HAS TO BEAT HERMITAGE or they might not make it. Varina HAS TO BEAT Deep Run now with the Herm loss to likely finish 4-2 or upset HSHS again this year which will be a tall task. How about Henrico? Can they play spoiler to one of those teams who are all common opponents? What if Monacan or Bird sneak in a victory vs Clover Hill or Manchester? Now they are both 5-1. Here is another wrench, Midlothian and Monacan don't play this year. Midlothian could be 4-2 with losses to Manchester or CH. What if a much improved Midlo steals one and is 5-1.

Nightmare scenario is a
6-0 HSHS
5-1 Hermitage
5-1 Deep Run
5-1 Manchester
5-1 Clover Hill
5-1 Prince George
Freeman, Bird, Midlo, Henrico, Glen Allen, Motoaca???

These teams all play each other so they control their own destiny but rest assured there will be some very good teams who don't make the playoffs in class 5 region B. My hope is that this all plays itself out and it will be obvious who should make it but I am pretty sure it is going to come down to points.

As always I love your points bro. I watched Freeman last night and damn those boys are tough (size, strength and SPEED ) but then again they played Godwin. Unless Monacan can beat Manchester (I believe Monacan has the best outside chance in the Dominon), I don’t see Clover Hill or Bird beating Manchester. Manchester will be 5-1 no worst. Back to your point, PG could very well be at worst 5-1, what about Henrico? The Warriors always sneak up on someone and they get Herm in a few weeks. I believe Atlee will qualify for the playoffs (SMH) so what if they go 6-0? HS has Freeman, Varina, and Deep Run.. Doubt it, but could there be an upset? I’m hearing Matoaca has a nice squad. It’s gonna be real interesting.

I didn’t even consider Atlee might make the playoffs. Guess playing PH twice could help them with points, especially if they manage to win? Feel pretty safe saying Hanover & Mechanicsville won’t be threats once again.

For a Hanover school to even have a chance at the playoffs, they’ll have to go 6-0. Atlee making it in 5B would kinda be a joke. Not sure how 4B chances are looking for the other 3.

They qualified for the 5B basketball regions but had to forfeit to Bird. I, and I’m sure everyone outside of their program, would be pretty pissed if they got into the playoffs this year.

Yeah, Covid-19 I believe.

Not a surprise. Those Hanover Co. high schools are quarantining kids by the dozen every time there’s a positive test. My friend’s kids are in Hanover. He said he gets 4-5 emails each week announcing positive tests and accompanying quarantine numbers. They have so many kids in classes (in-person 5 days a week) situated so close together (only 3-foot spacing), that nearly everyone around them is considered a “close contact”.

Things have improved in Hanover recently. I have a son in school, albeit elementary school and we were seeing quite a few e-mails for a 3-week stretch but over the last 2-3 weeks we have not seen the first one. Like within society with the positivity rate dropping, it seems like things are improving at schools too.

Given the above same records, those bonus points will mean a lot!

Good to hear! My understanding from my friend is that his elementary and middle school kids seem to doing pretty well keeping better distance. The HS his daughter attends, less so.

I know high schools in general have been the big issue in Hanover County but I believe if I am not mistaken the numbers are coming down there too. Let's hope the trend continues.

Monacan vs Manchester game was a bit of a sloppy mess for both teams and I am sure that is true for most teams that played last night. Manchester will be alright though, they dropped a lot of balls and had a lot of untimely penalties. Monacan left a few TD’s on the field also and went on cruise control a bit in the 4th quarter. I would have liked to see this one on a clean track but football is an all weather sport. Manchester needs to win all of them from here on out to make the playoffs.

Prince George had a huge win last night which hurts Manchester’s chances. Manchester needs PG to lose to both TD and Hopewell now.

Also, I was shocked to see Powhatan shut out Bird and Clover Hill scramble with JR for a 6-3 victory. We will know more in the coming weeks.

Stop being modest LOL, Monacan WHIPPED Manchester. I believe that this could be your guys’ year. Am I bias to 804 teams? Hell yeah, I know if they reach the championship, they beat top level competition to get there. Monacan’s offense is the best in 4A and your defense controlled the line of scrimmage against one of the biggest offensive lines in the state of Virginia. Total Monacan domination. Oh yeah, shut a D1 RB with over 20 POWER 5 offers down. If Salem fans can say they looked mid season form against Blacksburg (LOL), I will say that you all looked mid season form at times against a high quality team..

I wasn’t drinking the Manchester Kool Aid! . Should’ve finished Highland Springs off in the regular season and got very lucky Varina and Highland Springs had to play each other in Round 2. I believe the 5A Henrico teams are a little tougher than Chesterfield side this year.. PG has the potential to make some noise.

@springer76 - where art thou? Would have thought you would have chimed in now about 5B at some point we are 3 weeks into the season!
Like me....he’s not going to say very much, because we really don’t know what we have. The team has a lot of individual talent, but so do the other teams in the area. henrico is up tomorrow, and will have to see how that goes.

Henrico County Football is incredibly strong this year. I think we all know what the Springers are capable of as they’ve had very strong varsity and JV teams over the past few years and their program is consistent. Wont really know what the Springers really look like until they play Varina or Deep Run.

I want to give LC Bird credit. After a Powhatan game where they seemed a bit out of sorts... they played us tough last night. Typical Bird vs Monacan game. Tough, physical, lots of penalties on both sides etc. I do think Bird found their identity last night. They did a much better job with the spread offense. For those that don't know, they now run the spread and they had a nice RO going. Monacan went on cruise control a bit but it was a good win. Bird's biggest Achilles heel is can they consistently get stops and cut down on the penalties. I am sure they wish they could get a mulligan on the Powhatan game in the mud with the first time running the new offense. Monacan should handle business with Cosby next week and Bird plays Thomas Dale where they are likely underdogs in a rivalry game.

A few other thoughts:
How about Midlothian getting the big win over Clover Hill? What a difference a week makes for Deep Run! How about Hanover hanging tough with Patrick Henry? Big win for Herm against a physical Glen Allen team. Herm needs to find a passing game as this could be limiting come playoffs. Has the Colonial ever been this good from top to bottom? For 15 years or so.... Hermitage had just annihilated the field. Now there are multiple good teams which is nice to see. Varina making it look easy! Manchester and Powhatan had a good battle with the Lancers coming out on top but a very good showing by Powhatan. I sure hope that Covid 19 doesn't hamper Hopewell's playoff chances bc they are likely to repeat in class 3. Prince George has a thing for theatre apparently with another big comeback win. 50+ points at halftime for Dinwiddie over Petersburg, ouch! James River appears to be quality after pushing clover hill to the brink in a 6-3 loss in week one and blanking Cosby in week 2. I am interested to see how the Dominion and Colonial shakes out. Also, this is class 4 prognostication but I think Eastern View finally losses a regular season district game today against Courtland in their 1pm battle.

Hope everyone stayed injury free last night!

I guess we will know more after they play Glenn Allen next week, because Henrico wasn’t much of a game at all(53-0).
