Hermitage Coach Bedwell Sentenced

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - A football coach at Hermitage High School pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors after originally being charged with embezzlement from his time at L.C. Bird High School.

The judge sentenced David W. Bedwell, of Powhatan, to two years with all but two months suspended.

Chesterfield police said Bedwell, used school purchase orders at L.C. Bird to buy approximately $5,000 of equipment that he took with him when his employment ended.

Bedwell was employed as the schools athletic director at the time and was hired as the head football coach at Hermitage High School in Henrico this season. He also serves as a counselor at the school, Henrico School confirmed.

Bedwell was charged with two counts of embezzlement. He was released on a $3,000 secured bond. Those charges were later reduced when he pleaded guilty.

The equipment was located and returned to L.C. Bird High School.

I don't see how Henrico could justify keeping an employee who was convicted of stealing public funds. Felony or misdemeanor he is no longer considered to be credible because he was convicted of a crime involving lying, stealing and cheating. Trust is a huge factor here.

What Bird equipment was taken to Hermitage? Just kinda curious. Tech like sideline cameras??

But, I predict he coaches somewhere again one day. I shared these thoughts with Danny earlier today.

I think it will be at least a year or more, but someone will give him a shot. I believe he will be hired under the conditions that his fiscal responsibilities will be minimal, and even those will be thoroughly scrutinized. (And that provision will be primarily for public relations purposes).

As we all know, it's extremely hard to find quality head coaches these days. And nearly impossible to find a head coach with Bedwell's record of success. Some locality will be willing to accept him with his history. Maybe starting out as an assistant coach. And they will defend their choice by explaining that he accepted the punishment he was given, has made full restitution, and has apologized for his bad judgement. The locality that hires him will hold him up as an example of a person that made some mistakes, owned those mistakes, and is asking for the chance to prove that he still has something to offer.

Part of me wants to say, "no way", you don't deserve a second chance. But part of me wants to believe that he will eventually deserve just that, a second chance.

Smh.. I was taught to only speak when I knew what the hell I was talking about, you all should learn the same. Put some RESPECT on the GOAT’s name.

What comment is this in reference to?
Not yours bro... I’m speaking to the guys who don’t know what the HELL they’re talking about but think it’s okay to comment their two cents like they do. People really have some nerve. Like it or not..Bedwell is back and they better get used to a lot of WINNING on Hungary Springs Rd. The best active head football coach in the 804. *drops mic*

Best active head football coach in the 804? Some would say that title belongs to Coach Johnson at Highland Springs.

Well the big dog is back on the block. 4 year hiatus, somebody had to win and luckily it was the far East End boys representing the 804. Johnson is already one of the best coaches to ever step foot on the sidelines in VHSL history..

I would love to see the Hermitage-Highland Springers rivalry back as they made for some great playoff games.

Correct me if I am wrong but it sounds as though you are saying Highland Springs won because Bedwell was no longer leading the Skyhawks?

Seems obvious Bedwell is a great coach. I don’t know any details on this legal issue other than what was reported on the news. Sounds like some here assume Herm is gonna get another coach, but you’re saying he’s staying. Am I reading that right?

He's already back at work. Henrico County and Hermitage stayed with him because the charges were reduced to misdemeanors. His resume speaks for itself with his work at Henrico and of course LC Bird where he had his biggest successes. I have no doubt he will be successful at Hermitage.

I’d say yes. Not just Bedwell but Patrick Kaine’s resignation too. Hermitage and Bird lost a lot when those two coaches left.

Kane stepped down following the 2017 season and the Springers won 3 state titles while he was still at the helm.

Highland Springs nearly beat Bird in 2014 with Bedwell at the helm, Skyhawks won 25-23. A year later Bedwell was at the helm of Bird in 2015 when the Springers won their 1st state title and 2016 when the Springers won their second.

Hey that’s why LJ is one of the best to ever do it. Bedwell’s last year at Bird, his team had no business beating Hermitage in the playoffs (Herm’s QB got hurt). A year before Herm came back from 35-7 to lose to HS 42-35 in OT in the playoffs. In 2017, HS’s JV team from the previous year beat Herm in the playoffs after Herm beat them in OT during the regular season. Not taking anything away from HS.

That game didn't go to overtime. Herm came back and tied it at 35 with about 3 minutes left. HS's last possession, featured the old hook and ladder play that got them near the goal line and the scored with abiut a minute or so left. HS won 42-35. No OT!
