Hey Riverheads folks

It looked to me that the visitors side had more folks than the home side, although it appeared there were more vehicles parked there than there were people in the stadium!!!

I would agree with Fence Patrol's assessment. Very nice crowd from Essex and not as many on the home side as we have seen in some of the past home games. As for the parking, you have to grab whatever you can right now because of the construction.

It has always amazed me at how much larger the stadiums are in the southwestern part of the state. Especially in Region D. There is truly some amazing fields in that region.

By far the nicest stadium complex here in the valley is East Rockingham, but that is because the school itself is new, maybe about 12 years old by now. All five Augusta County schools are at least 50 years old, as scary as that is to think about, but they have been remodeled along the way and all of them have their original gyms plus newer ones and various levels of improvement to their football fields.

A new school is under construction in Harrisonburg to open sometime in the next couple of years so it will be interesting to see what kind of facilities it has.

Seems a majority of the Essex crowd stood on the track along the fence. There was plenty seating available throughout the stands. Is that just what they're used to doing?

Guess there is not much else to do in SWVA on Fri nights but they have huge crowds compared to this area. Our game against Sussex a few weeks ago had almost no visitor fans and probably the smallest home crowd I have seen since the covid season when we had to watch from outside the fence. Granted it was pretty cold that night, guess being on the radio and tv doesnt help attendance either. Seems like since games have been on NHFS attendance has dropped quite a bit. Be interested to know what the gate $ is now compared to like 5-6 years ago. Longtimer you have any info on that?

The attendance numbers are certainly down due NFHS. It’s just too easy for people to set at home and pay less money for 4 games than you would to watch one if you include consessions and fuel.

As far as not being much to do in swva compared to your area , no doubt! Although I think it has alot to do with tradition and culture. When I say that I mean more of how the administration feels about sports programs .The schools seem to just spend more on the programs. I mean even schools like chilhowie have huge bleachers that run the length of the field on both sides. Ridgeview and Union look like small college campuses.
When I did my graduate assistant coaching internship in east Tenn me and couple of the coaches would try and catch some HS games on Friday nights and you could tell which schools had different cultures around sports. Same size schools in basically a close geographic location different sports complexes.

I don't have any inside information on attendance but it seems to me as if Riverheads crowds have been pretty consistent these past few years. That is of course in line with the success of the team. I did not really think Saturday's crowd was smaller until some of you brought it up. Interestingly we sometimes have larger crowds at away games than we do at home. In fact I thought our side at the Waynesboro game this year was HUGE! But maybe that was just because it was the first game of the season.

When the Gladiators move to 2A next season will they be joining Region B with Central, Draft, Strasburg and the rest Region B
