Stuarts Draft VA
After tonight's results, and results in weeks prior, and I wasn't there so don't know, but did W&L just have a bad game against Riverheads or is Riverheads just that much better than everyone else?

It sounds like Riverheads is getting better every week, and so is W&L with a couple impressive wins.

I know that Riverheads people said they had some good looking athletes and I believe saying that the game was closer than score.

To me its better to talk about this than fights between people, or just saying one team is so far superior that everyone is playing for 2nd place

So Riverheads fans, W&L fans any chance they were off that night, or better yet, any chance that in a rematch they can hang?

I'm not certain that can be correctly answered. Riverheads folks --- I would suspect --- have only see W&L that night and folks out this way are really clueless as to the level at which Riverheads competes

I think they come out and hang with Riverheads but don’t feel like they can beat Riverheads unless it’s where we turn the ball over two or three times and penalties that put us behind the yard sticks. But there is no doubt they could beat us

To answer most of your original questions, yes. It could be any or all of those things. As I stated in other threads W&L has some very good athletes and does some things that are difficult to defend. There’s still a lot of football left but I think both teams are better for having played each other so early.

Riverheads in a league of their own. I saw W&L against them and against WP. I don’t think they played good in either of those games and it seems they are improving each week. They will definitely be battle tested throughout their district. Kudos to them for playing a grueling out of district schedule. And they may get a rematch with RH later on to prove me wrong.
Now RH. Against W&L, I don’t think they were firing on all cylinders since it was the first game also but they seem to have that engine tuned up now.
Order the rings. Everyone else no worries, 2nd place ain’t bad.

The Region A title is the prize (and it will be an all out war to win it.)

I say Region A Champion plays Galax (or whoever wins C and D).

Just give Riverheads the trophy for their collection and let our champ play Galax.

I've been thinking all morning and I really think it's Galax and RH in salem. I've been firm on that all year. But I've got a gut feeling that Essex may pull a win out against RH if they meet up in the playoffs. I don't know why I just do. I still thinks RH walks to salem but Essex just sticks out in my mind as the one.

RedPrideNation_RollPride what are tall DBs looking like this year? Is that a weakness or just another strength?

@G MASTER BLASTER W, work in progress to be honest but they held up against Glenvar who has a decent passing game and Colonial Beach they had just thrown for 3 tds against Sussex. Essex is always in the picture and will be again this year. They will have a time getting out of region A to get to the state semi. I don’t see us as a lock to be in that game but we are looking pretty stout right now.

If yall think that Riverheads is unbeatable, UNC outplayed Clemson as a HUGE underdog.

Yes Clemson found a way to win, but it shows that nobody is unbeatable, certainly not to say just give them the trophy.

And if you want to go to HS, I remember the same talk before they took on Galax. I believe Galax was 6-4.

I'm not saying that Riv will get beat, but to talk about them like they are invincible is ludicrous.

I personally don't mean to make it seem as they are unbeatable. Anyone can be beat on any given night under the lights. But in order for them to drop one this season it's either gonna take 1- A mistake filled night. 2- A crazy weather night or 3- A team that is as well coached and as talented putting all 3 phases of the game together and RH only having 2 working. And imo Galax is the only team I see in 1A currently that fits that bill.

Since we are into generalizations, I would say that not a person that has said that in the past month has seen this team this year.

I agree, and that isn't saying they aren't as good as advertised. I just have no idea how some can think a team is unbeatable, certainly not the "won't lose a game next few years" when they haven't seen that team play

Oh I see it and wonder what they are seeing that I am not. I only wish this team were as good as some make them out to be.

Its almost like they never lose a game. And I believe you have 1 undefeated season.

I haven't seen this years team, but I think the last 3 championship teams weren't as "talented" as years before.

So if I were answering the question, IF they do go on an win the next how ever many rings its because the other schools have regressed. That's not a knock on Riverheads, they seem to have more depth, but the super team thing just doesn't make sense to me

Looks like Draft is the team to beat ! They are putting big numbers on everyone .

For me personally I think they are the team to beat because of how well they are coached. How well those kids buy into that system and how well they execute it. They are beatable just like everyone else is. But there is only 1 other team in 1A that is as well coached as RH and that's Galax. If talent is even then coaching will decide the game and those 2 are the best coached.

Take GW for example we are probably close to as good as any in 1A with our staring 11. But beyond that it's not to much to be bragging about we've taken a step back cause kids just aren't coming out like they used to. The culture seems to be changing imo it will be back to as strong as ever in probably 2 more years. So when you have a team like Galax or RH who has coaches who the kids will come out for and will play for then you have a jump in success. And what does success produce? More success. And over the past 5-6 years Galax and RH has had a ton of success so kids want to be a part of that so they come out and play. At GW yes we've had some nice seasons on paper but we've also had more than enough to win a title and got out coached by Dixon and Casto. I know I know we expect way to much out of our teams in Wytheville. But as the other diehards on here know when you're around these kids all your life you know what they are capable of. So do the kids so when they see talent being wasted for bs reasons or games thrown away because timeouts were taken or not taken ect ect ect they stop playing. And those things happen all over the state except for 2 small pockets RH and Galax. Coaching is why I'm so high on RH and Galax. RH won't face a coach in his league until they play Galax if they meet up. (That's just my opinion) So They shouldn't have much trouble on their way to Salem. I can promise you Galax won't see a coach in their league unless they play RH in Salem so they shouldn't have much trouble. And yeah I know they lost last night but hell that's a small 1A team vs A pretty good 3A team. Galax only became more impressive in my book by even keeping up with NS.

So really long post made short. Galax and RH have title contender talent backed by Elite level coaching. That combination equals championship caliber teams most of the rest of us currently only have one of or none of those things. So it's extremely hard to beat them when we are behind the 8 ball before it even starts.

Sometimes you're the hammer sometimes you're the nail. Currently RH and Galax are two heavy ass sledge hammers. And the rest of us are the nails.

I was thinking on this again last night and went back to look their record since 2008. Over that time frame the Gladiators are 126-18 with four losses to a 1A team. In 2008 to Buffalo Gap in the regular season, 2008 to William Campbell in playoffs, 2009 to Altavista and 2015 to Galax, the last two were champions that year. That’s four losses in 10-1/2 years with only one in the last 5 years. I didn’t realize until I looked back at it but that is pretty impressive.

That all said, these stats really have nothing to do with this years team only to say that the coaching staff has been fairly effective over that timeframe. My personal opinion is that there are 5-6 schools that have a legitimate shot this year. It will depend on many things come playoff time, including weather as it did last year in at least two or three games.

Is this team beatable? Yes and I am confident we will see marked improvement by the top tier teams across the state. What that all means is that every game from here on out will be a test. I don’t think that many teams have cupcakes on their schedule so it gets real moving forward.

Out them 18 losses how many are to district teams. Hard to plan for Riverheads if you don’t play them very often this is why I think W&L is the team I would least likely to see from region A
