Thank you all for welcoming us into your community yesterday. You like Haysi are a very proud and devoted community to you high school. I didn't get an opportunity to meet many of you, but the ones that I did are awesome. I would like to personally apologize for whoever the idiots where down in the end zone talking to your player on the field before the kickoff late in the game. I can assure you that those folks where not from A-town, because we just do not behave that way.

Your team is a very good team and they play every down like it's their last. I saw a lot of good sportmanship on both sides of the ball yesterday (lots of helmet slaps, and high fives for the opponent). I know that emotions run high in a game like this and we all tend to get a little over excited. Saying that I'm not sure why early in the game your coach ran out on the field after the obvious face mask penalty for the extra point attempt, because that face mask was very very obvious when Thornhill's head spun all the way around. Now the face mask penalty before that was on the other side of the field so I could not see that one and if I was the coach that would have been the one that I went on the field for (maybe one of you for Honaker can enlighten me). This was just my observation and opinion maybe the coach saw something that I didnt....none the less I love going to your side of the state and maybe next year yall can come see us.

Thanks again Honaker Tigers and good luck to all the seniors, I wish you well.

Thanks....we enjoyed hosting you all....Like they say to be the best you have to beat the best and we couldn't get it done yesterday!

Of course Thornhill is a beast but #1 Maulbeck is who I was most impressed with yesterday (other than Thornhill) that kid played lights on both sides of the ball! IMO if he had the size of some of the rest of your players he would be going somewhere too.

As far as the facemask that the coach went out on the field on I couldn't see from where I sit (around the 40 on the other end of the field)....my old man stands down there where it happened and I went and asked him at halftime if it was or not....him and some guy that wasn't from Honaker both said that it looked like all jersey but Thornhill jerked his head around to see who had a hold of him. Either way that's not what beat us...you just can't commit 7 or 8 penelties and 7 turnovers against a really good team and win!

The idiots in the end zone ...from what I'm hearing we're from a local school that used to beat us all the time and haven't in a few years! Haters will be Haters!

The sportsmanship on the field was really good from what I saw too, butt pats, helmet pats after a good plays either way! But the biggest one was as the game was over and they were walking through shaking hands there was a lot of hugs that went with those hand shakes!

Great game though at least till about midway 4th....Congrats and Good Luck next week!

Thanks for the post! Definitely was good hosting another team we dont see often!! You guys brought a great crowd and people I talked to were super nice and very complimentary of the facilities and area! Great sportmanship during the game and thats great to see!! Hope you all enjoyed your trip down to SWVA(of course it makes it nicer when u travel back with a W)!

It was CLEARLY 100% a face mask

Without a doubt it was a facemask. I don't care what the coach said ("it was the jersey") or the Honaker sideline said. IT WAS A FACE MASK! End of story. Period.

So about the game... It was a hard fought defensive battle between two teams. Honaker's defense did a really good job stopping the Colonels for three and a half quarters before Altavista's speed wore down Honaker.

The first big run came with five minutes to go and Honaker down 10, but people have said "they lost heart/focus" or "knew where the game was" you're down 10 with five minutes to play and your defense had done a good job stopping Altavista, so I don't buy that. Thornhill's speed finally wore out Honaker. And he popped a big run with a great block from Maulbeck. The final run, OK, maybe the team knew their fate then.

Great photo! I think the Coach was already fired up over the chop black call and the 5 yd facemask that was call that didnt happen(I had a front row on that one) truthfully. Maybe he didnt see it clearly. I dont knw why he chose to argue that one more but obviously he thought it wasnt and he was takingup for his boys!! He has their back and if he thinks he stands up for them he does it and they repect him for it! Im sure you expect the same from your coach of your team huh? Maybe he was trying fire up his players! Who knows but its football ... it happens you never argue calls? Do you jus say oh ok thank you for throwing the flag on me sir. It didnt lose us the game and the Colonels still won!

Thats the first run all game that i saw him use his speed on offense... first time he hit the hole at full speed. And he broke it! Congrats dude! I dont buy the speed wore us out thing either. I can agree to disagree. Colonels have a great team and good team speed. #1 is a little beast!! Congrats!

When it happened I thought "Why this call?" not "why argue a call" There were a couple other calls in the first half that were much more questionable than this call. If it had been on of the other ones I would understand. Though this one "cost his team the least" it moved the ball from the 1-yard line to the 1/2-yard line. I don't mind arguing calls but I think it hurts any further chance you have when you argue clearly correct calls.

I agree 100% with whoopy about the speed wearing them down. I don't think happened at all, IMO our boys struggled with traction all day and on that 1 particular run Thornhill did not have to make any moves to get in the open field and he was able to use his speed and with a GREAT block by Maulbeck in the open field he was able to follow it.

I agree a coach should question certain calls during the game to (yes of course) show his boys that he will take up for them during the course of the game. I just wandered why he chose that particular one call when (IMO) it was so obvious. Your also right that it didn't cost the Tigers the game at all, so maybe thats why he chose that one to get a point across because he knew the most it would cost was 2 points. As far as it setting a standard that any call he argues from then on would not be legitimate or the officials would not listen to it, I don't buy that either.

I would say it if i thought it happened but we had two very athletic, well conditioned teams on the field yesterday.
I think people get big, strong, and conditioned confused with "fat boys" as some have called us.

Well MrJ .. I'm not the coach but I put myself on the sidelines in a game like this as a coach. Why THIS call? If i truly believed in that moment it wasnt a facemask and we jus stopped a 2pt conversion try and it will be 12-0 instead of 14-0 only to be flagged and give you another shot then that was big at that point in the game and im going to be furious. Obviously it was the right call in the end and its a mute point but in that moment it was big. So maybe thats why that call idk.

I was down on the field before the Honaker kids were dressed out...I saw a bunch of athletic, strong, good-looking kids. "Fat boys??" I don't think so!!!

Hey

Maybe some Essex fans went to the wrong game.

Thanks, some times it's hard for some people to take a joke. Now that you mention it, I did get body hair at an early age.

The point hokieheelz is speed kills....that's why Altavista won.....and are you seriously a Hokie FB fan and a Heels BB fan? I hope not......pick a school.

It was a great game until Honaker rolled over. Give the guys some credit, Thornhill never got going till halfway through the forth, So how did his speed wear them down when they wasn't chasing him, he was getting stuffed at the line. He did get that one big run mid 4th. Then Honaker just rolled over. Altavista came to play though, Early penaltys and mistakes from Honaker really hurt them.

So you're saying Honaker did not roll over against Radford, but did against Altavista. I wonder if maybe you aren't missing something there.

I understand your implication exactly. Your saying the game with Radford was close because you didn't roll over, but the Altavista game wasn't because Honaker did. I understand exactly, and I'm saying there's a helluva difference between Altavista and Radford, and that was very likely the issue......the opponent.

Radford has nothing to do with this conversation. Honaker, and Altavista. After Thornhills first long TD run Honaker rolled over, score was 24-7 with almost 5 mins to go. # 56, #55 wasn't even in the game on the next TD.

24-7 with five left. sounds pretty much over to me, especially since Honaker was dominated the entire game. Get over it.

You get over it bumper lips. I've been over it.
Blue bumper lips and Fort89 has got to be the same person, there cant be 2 of them, there just cant be!

I can't stand whiny ass Radford people. Relax Homer. It's only seven months until next season and then you can over-react all over again. Settle down. It's the Christmas season. Enjoy life. Drink some warm apple cider. Chill down. You'll feel better for it.
