Honaker Vs. Altavista

It should be a really good game by two really good teams .Honaker has really good size kids , they run multiple sets they play really good defense . But saying that Altavista has already face these kind of teams the last three years . There Battle tested and ready for the challenge. The question I have is Honaker going to try to stop the run or pass ? How they going to slow down all that speed ? . It's going to be one heck of the game . I think one of the best games in the state this weekend.

Same as last week, speed vs power. Speed won, always does at the 1A level. It doesn't matter how well coached a team is, if you can't someone you can't tackle them. And Vista has it on both side of the ball.

Yes HokieTD, I also look for it to be a really good game. What most people don't realize is that Honaker has a lot of speed with their skilled position players also. The defensive front are big and strong and hard to move. The linebackers are big and read really well. But enough said, may the best team win . Safe travel coming to Honaker

Looking forward to a great game, always enjoy coming to SW Virginia for a game. Everybody talks about Colonels speed, but they can hit. Haysi Coach Colley said after last year's game that AHS LB Destin Brown is " one of the toughest linebackers I've ever coached against." What news shots and YouTube video I've seen, Honaker has speed and size too.

Speed don't always win...that was disproved when Clintwood won state. Both Sussex and Galax had more speed than Clintwood.

Essex has had more team speed in both of the last state championship games and have had difficulty scoring. I think coaching matters. Essex has a good coach but fowler and scharnus are better and have much better staffs.

I would like to see an all West final but don't think it's going to happen. If Honaker would fly in Heath Miller, they might have a better shot at winning.

Having not seen the Tigers any this year I can only go by what I have read. Looks like this will be a battle and the better D will win. I'm looking forward to traveling to Honaker, if their fans are anything like the awesome folks at Haysi last year, it's going to be great.

Altavista is loaded at skill positions. What I like about them is they can score from anywhere on the field on any given play, whether run or pass. They do not need 8 minute drives punching out 3 or 4 yards per play. Plus they have a good defense to get ball back after their quick scores. Also they have good special teams, and a good coaching staff.
One of the most complete teams I have seen recently. If they have a weakness, I haven't seen it yet. I have seen them play 4 or 5 games.

Everyone thinks they have speed until they play Vista. They won't need to move the big strong dline. They will run around them and past the LB's. I think it will be a good game and expect Honaker to give them their toughest test of the year, but from the video I have seen, I don't think Honaker can stop them as many times as Vista will stop Honaker.

A good spread team

A good spread team can neutralize line play. You are correct 2X4. While line is doing their thing, the skill guys are long gone. A spread team doesn't always have to move anyone, just screen them, and skill guys get in space and score.

Re: A good spread team

The best team usually wins. Scheme can only get you so far. Power run teams can beat spread teams and vice versa. Just so happens Altavista is the better team in this situation. Do not see this one being very close.

Re: A good spread team

Speaking purely from an entertainment value, power run team is boring to watch and a spread team is exciting. IMO

This will be a great game to watch, especially going as a neutral fan!

We all know that Honaker is the underdog, but I think that a lot of people are underestimating their defense AND offense. Win or lose I think that a lot of people are going to be surprised by the Tigers.

Over the past 40 years or so I have observed high school football in Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, and now Virginia. Needless to say, I've seen enough speed on the gridiron in all these places to dang near set the turf on fire. That being said, I have yet to see a badly coached team with a lot of team speed win anything that really counted. I saw Alta Vista play for the first time last week, and by no means are they a badly coached team. They wouldn't have beaten Parry MaClure if that were the case.

I think that you are wrong is saying that Honaker is the underdog......The game is being played at Honaker, and Honaker is the #1 seed. Now by some people's opinion on this board I would agree that Honaker is the underdog, but not by VHSL standards....

I called Honaker the underdog for a reason. According to maxpreps.com which uses stats to compare teams, the Tigers should finish 3rd in the state behind Alta Vista and Essex and 90% of the people I have talked to agree. I'm not insulting the Tigers at all, I said they were being underestimated and I truly think Honaker has a good chance at an upset victory. I will be there cheering for Honaker come rain, snow, or sunshine! I also think Haysi is being underestimated and expect to see them at the finals!

I've got Altavista. The number of speed players/weapons means the Colonels will find the end zone. Aided by Honaker's home turf field, the Colonels' speed will be too much for the Tigers. Honaker puts up a fight but the number of quick legs of the Colonels on offense lets Altavista pull away in the second half.

Like last week, a team can come out and hang with the Colonels for a while but as the game goes on, the speed kills. Because not only do you have to stop it on defense, it chases you on offense. PM's Dawson was gassed by the end of the game because of the Colonels speed and I think we'll see the same thing this week.

When you dominate the first half, you try not to do too much in the second half to keep it respectable for the other team.

Not good comparison

Altavista probably had JVs, water boys and cheerleaders on field in 4th quarter of most games. Comparing that stat is worthless.

Too much speed, too much athleticism, too much power.

Alta V by 21.

Speed beats fat boys every time......put that speed on turf and it's like hitting another gear. Altavista to much for Honaker.

If you cannot catch someone you cannot tackle them. When defense has more speed than your offense, you have hard time breaking "the big one".

I saw a team once go 80 yards on first play from scrimmage. They still haven't scored.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE ...ALTAVISTA

I think we play the games for a reason.... Hoping for a good game this Saturday. Would like to welcome all the Altavista faithul and players to Honaker's Fuller Field and say that I hope all you guys have a safe trip down to Russell County. As for the game Whoopy don't know much about AV but they sound as good as advertised (looking forward to seeing them). Honaker cannot start out slow and make mistakes as they did against Radford(this is Key). Down in Honaker we BELIEVE, no towel will be thrown in because we are underdogs, that is fact! I can promise that AV will know they are in a ballgame on Saturday! But whether the score is close or not so close (whatever the case may be), I pray for a safe game with no injuries and great sportsmanship!!!!!!! Good luck Colonels and Go Tigers!!!!! Go West!!!! BDD PRIDE!!!!!!!!!!

Speed will be a factor for Honaker, I totally agree with that, but
Honaker will penetrate the defense of Vista with some underestimated speed, and more importantly pure strength. It may be a few yards at a time but Honaker will get through them. I expect both teams to
score over 20 and for it to be a close game.

Eleven of Thirteen games Altavista has played this year the JV kids have played pretty much the whole second half. Players #1,#2 #3, #6, #7, #10 , #11, #23, #24, and #48 are in the Defensive backfield before the line can move. The quickest fastest team I've seen in fourth years of following football. But don't let the small size fool you those kids WILL hit you hard.( ask Essex, This is the same group they faced in the State last year ). Their kicker is a deep kicker with very few returns, and if needed for a FG he is deadly from 40 yards out. I'm not bragged just stating facts.

Altavista also has more players going both ways than Honaker. Honaker will keep fresh players and pound, and pound.I am no Honaker fan PERIOD. I hope Altavista wins. However I do believe, as I've already said in previous posts. I believe Honaker has the recipe to beat Altavista...24-21. Honaker has a lot of players that can, and do play. I saw six players for Altavista last week that never came out of the game.

I'm excited to make a trip back down that way, for what I believe will be a great matchup.

Here is what I think, one team will win, the other will lose. I'm a Honaker fan, always will be! Altavista might come down here and beat the tires off us and we might beat the tires off them! But, the thing that matters the most, is the game has to be played! Can't wait to see it! Turf does help speed, and it will be a great game!

I've been told by several altavista fans that they are very vulnerable to a good passing game.

Re: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE ...ALTAVISTA

Looking forward to the trip to Honaker. If the hospitality was anything like we experienced at Haysi last year, it will be awesome. Great game, great fans, great atmosphere. From what I've seen, Honaker is for real.....
