I haven't seen Hopewell play this year but, I know SR is very well coached and probably has the best backfield of anyone in 3A. SR executes and does not have penalties or turnovers. Overstreet should once again be the best player on the field. When your team has the best player, you always have a shot. I could be wrong but I believe it will be a SR-Phoebus championship in 3A. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

I can assure you, SRHS is seeing a VERY talented team in Hopewell. They see size and speed and some dynamic players on both sides of the ball. Certainly should be a great high school football game.

Seems most are giving SR the advantage here. I'll simply say this...don't sleep on Hopewell. They are a very good, fundamentally sound football team. SR may very well get the job done, and I may give them the slight advantage, but I for one won't be surprised if Hopewell got it done. I think this will be a much tighter game than many seem to be thinking.

I am pulling for Staunton River. There record since 1999 is 64 - 126. Never played in a state game or won, so I really want them to win

Staunton River certainly is the "IT" team. I hope and pray for good weather and health to all players.
What I wonder is will Hopewell be able to simulate the single wing in practice to get a good feel prior to Gameday. Have they faced any teams with this much misdirection or handoffs? Will be a fun game if Xs and Os.

Does anyone know how many times s.river has thrown the ball this year. I don't believe they have thrown it this post season

Well I can say that MV had a good practice preparing for that single wing the week leading up to the "on paper" great game! But you just can't simulate how SR runs that wing! MV had 5 players in street clothes for the SR game (3 of which were starters) but IMHO, MV would still have gotten beat by 20+ points by SR! I haven't seen a team that can match player for player in stopping that wing! Honestly this team reminds me of the old Salem teams when Willis White used to coach his "mules" and they would just flat out bully a defensive front and their backs would run right by a pancaked defender on their way to paydirt! SR is just so classy as well! Good luck to all teams, stay healthy, and be careful in your travels!

Does Hopewell regularly play anyone that uses the single wing? If not, this could be a very long day for them. Staunton River has steamrolled everyone that has experience defending the wing. I can't imagine what they will do against a defense that isn't prepared for it.

I expect it will be SR vs. Phoebus, but I have been wrong about Blacksburg all year. If Blacksburg can pull off the upset, they are one team that might have a chance against Staunton River. They have faced the single wing for literally decades and may have a learned a few things in that time.

Thanks. Simulation with speed is hard to replicate especially when your starters gave to see, react, remember and repeat at the same time and get comfortable. Lot to ask of any student athlete with less than a week to prepare.

Not seeing Hopewell in person BUT seeing film, I am MORE than impressed. Speed on top of speed and SEVERAL play makers and size to boot. SR will most certainly need to bring their A game. Anyone that is still playing this time of year is a really good team. To think that one team would overlook another is simply ludicrous. Hopewell is a great team and they have had a magnificent year.

Glad to see a Staunton River fan on here. I am pulling for you guys to win it all.

Thank you so much wikki! We still have a long ways to go but I love our kids and coaches. Should be interesting Saturday. Thank you for your support.

Hopewell plays in the Central District and no one runs the single wing, nor did any of their out of district teams ( 4a Hanover, 4a Powhatan, and 3aTabb). In the games they lost (4a Dinwiddie, 6aThomas Dale and 4a Powhatan) they struggled stopping the run, so Staunton River should have some success on the ground. Hopewell does have very good team speed, so it may be difficult for SR to beat them on the edge. I look for Hopewell to play with fewer db's, add a linebacker and push the safeties up. If Staunton River doesn't pass as you guys have said its surely not going to hurt them.

Offensively, Hopewell utilizes a pistol formation. Ronnie Walker (4 star recruit is a shifty runner that cuts off blocks very well. Nas Cooper is their 260 pound fullback and this guys runs very well for a big guy. They have two quarterbacks in Hill and Cuffey. Both also play receiver when the other is at quarterback. Sean Allen is their top receiver and he is extremely fast. They have an average sized line and look to score quickly.

I know nothing about Staunton River other than what has been posted, but I can read stats. This team can flat put up points. If SR can control the line of scrimmage as expected I look for them to defeat Hopewell in a track meet. Good luck to both teams.

What time is the game on Saturday, I might try to make it

SR can LIGHT UP that scoreboard man. Hopewell is going to have to slow down the o, because no one can keep up with that. Western Albemarle put up 79 POINTS on them last year and didn't win.

William Byrd really held that offense in check.

That game was a mud bath. A couple of fumbles that led to byrd TDs. I could see that offense being hard to run when its wet. I think opening drive SR did what they been doing to everyone else.

They are both teams that run the ball every play. William Byrd was better up front by quite a bit on both sides of the ball.

I am not saying that SR isn't awesome offensively because they are but one team did find a way to shut them down.

I appreciate the breakdown of Hopewell's opponents and profile. I feel it may take 40-45 points to win. Should be a matchup that favors each team's best strength. Last team with ball may decide it.

Thanks Lnacerhoo. I will try and get a look at some video of SR, so I can give you a better analysis.

We (Dinwiddie) play Hopewell every year and I know their talent very well. My Generals put it on them the past two seasons, but we utilize a spread offense and forced them to defend the pass; therefore creating nice running lanes.

Hopewell will score, but I just dont know how well they will defend SR's running game. If they can get penetration with their speed it could make things interesting. I asked a friend who is close to the program how the planned to stop the wing t and he said "who knows". I guess we shall see.

Update: I was able to get my hands on the SR vs. JF game. I am very impressed with SR. I know this may not matter, but Hopewell is much more balanced, talented and has more speed than JF. With that said and what I saw on video Hopewell will struggle stopping Staunton Rivers inside running game. I still believe their speed will help them cover the edge, but damn SR's sweeps are quick hitting.

Defensively, Staunton River will have an equally difficult time stopping Walker on cutbacks and Hopewells receivers will be a load for SR's dbs.

Still believe Staunton River wins and if they pound the ball inside they will wear Hopewell down in the second half.

Just curious as to how many yards Overstreet has on the season. I thought I saw somewhere at the beginning of the year that he had around 3300 career yards and counting whatever he has this year he could have a good shot at breaking the VHSL career rushing record next season

According to the local news advance.com, he recorded 1763 yds during the regular season and has amassed 860 yards in the first three rounds of playoffs. I think his current total is over 5300 yards.
