Horrible Weather Experience for Brunswick Team

Was on my way to Arcadia to see the Brunswick game when the storm hit. We had gone 90 of the 180 miles and couldn't go any further. The team bus had crossed the bridge tunnel and was about an hour ahead of our party. The Tidewater area was not prepared for this storm - no clearing of roads, no salt treatments, etc. It took us 5 hours to get from the bridge on Rt. 13 back to Suffolk. A horrible night. So glad the team bus got home safe and sound. The Greensville girls played Nandua and decided to get a hotel rather than try to get back last night.

Brunswick boys beat Arcadia 72-62. I don't have any specifics but we are facing another weather problem tomorrow, having to leave by noon to travel to George Mason in Falls Church. We are supposed to get 3-7 inches of snow and the northern areas are to get even more.

With Bruton not being able to play Amelia today, what will this do to the Hanover Saturday Final Four and the Tuesday Finals at Orange? Does 2A East have a back-up plan?

I would hope there is a backup plan. But you never know come basketball tournament time. Everyone needs to be flexible. If game needs to be relocated, then do it.

That's awful, hopefully Mother Nature shows some sympathy for the tournaments, though not likely lol.

I've just been told that the 2A East Regional is ON HOLD until Bruton Amelia boys and girls and Windsor Nottoway girls play their first round game. So Brunswick is not going to Mason tomorrow night. No other Quarterfinal games will be played until those other 3 games are completed.

This is another reason why I have a strong dislike for the post season set up...I would wish they would go back to having district tournaments, and the two top teams from each district advance in their specific classifications...example, say top two teams in Shenandoah are both 2A, then those two teams advance to regionals...next teams 3 & 4 are 1A or 3A then they advance....I don't think it's fair to have more then two classifications in one district..but, I know there are three different in the Shenandoah District...1A-3A...do away with this conference nonsense and these regionals are a joke...example. East Rock girls have to travel to Bluestone to play a regional game...how is that a regional game?? when u have to travel 4 hours one way to play a 32 minute game!!

I really miss the district tournaments (especially the ones at EMU) dwcherb. Lee girls have to go to Nandua

I like the new playoff format for football, but I liked the old format for basketball.

Heard the same thing from East Rock AD

To me it would be best to do away with districts and play your conference opponents. Here in the Piedmont District you have a range of 5 classes; 1 2A, 3 3A, 2 4A, 1 5A and 1 6A.At least in the conference you are playing schools your size. I know travel is an issue, but this time of year it's an issue for everybody. Heck here in 2A west, conference 37 and 38 are finally going to attempt to play their championships tonight (weather permitting) but conference 39 and 40 haven't even started yet. Then our travels really start. But to me that's what playoffs are about, travel to different parts of the state and meet new people. Mother Nature can be a real pain in the butt, not much you can do about her though.

I thought we were kinky out here in the Valley, but FIVE different classifications in one district?????????? If you will pardon the expression, that is total "horsehockey."

Does the 2-A school just go into every game feeling defeated before they even start?

Not in basketball. The 2A school is Martinsville and they can compete in basketball. Their record now is 20-6 but they lost 2 out of 3 to 5A Halifax, lost 2 out of 3 to 4A GW Danville, lost once in OT to 6A Franklin Co and lost by 1 to 1A Radford(non-district game). But this the only sport other than maybe soccer that they are competitive in. They don't have to play Halifax or Franklin Co in anything since there is a more than a 3 classification difference in size, but other than not playing Franklin in football I believe they play everybody else in all sports. District is comprised of: 6A Franklin Co, 5A Halifax Co, 4A GW Danville & Bassett, 3A Magna Vista, Tunstall & Patrick Co.

Personally I think 5 classifications in the same "district" is a joke.

I think most conferences could do a better job on selecting venues for tournaments. Pick a centralized location for each game. If one school is 4 hours from another school, common sense says play it half way between the 2 schools, thus it's a 2 hour drive for each team, not a 4 hour drive for one. No team should ever have to travel 4 hours for a game.

Preaching to the choir Mayberry, what we need is "da trey" back in town. He would get every thing straightened out. Long live "da trey", miss him on here. He kept everything stirred up as far as Mavahi was concerned!!

I agree...it works in football because the weather doesn't affect the playing of games near as much...but, your girls have to travel 6 hours for a regional game?? that is beyond ridiculous, and having 5 different classes in any one district is also stupid...I can see an higher seed hosting a game, but, when travel miles are more then 100, then I have to agree with HR6....find a more central locale if possible

I'm glad everyone made it home safely, BUT...

please don't complain about the weather, you have NO IDEA what the schools in far southwest VA have gone through for the past two weeks. Try dealing with curvy mountain roads, sub- feezing temps, two feet of snow that turned into ice after it rained on top of it on Saturday. Some folks haven't left their homes for over a week and school has been cancelled since the 12th.

A few inches of snow is nothing....

Time to make adjustments.

Knightsfan - this is crazy that the whole regional tournament will be put ON HOLD b/c three games were not able to be played. It is interesting that these are Conference 33 & 34 teams, & both had no problem canceling their tournaments due to snow. How much of an up roar would take place if the regional directors made the same decisions as the conference 33 & 34 directors did? It would be a shame for Greensville who is a legit contender, and the other schools involved. After all it is based on a time frame set by VHSL & the conference/regional directors.

The VHSL regional deadline is set this year for March 7th, which is a Saturday. The 2A East semi-finals & finals are set for February 28th (Saturday) & March 3rd (Tuesday). This doesn't make much sense. Snow dates are needed which is understandable, but two weeks are allotted for the regional deadline.

Not much money is going to be taken in on a Tuesday night final for teams that could end up traveling 3hrs 30 mins (Greensville) or 3 hrs (Bruton). These are the farthest drives for schools still left in the 2A East Boys side. On the girls' side it would be 4 hrs 30 mins (Nandua) & 3 hrs 15 mins (Windsor). These teams may not make it that far, but if they do then the location of Orange County HIgh School should be reconsidered.

There are 1A East, 2A West, & 1A West conferences that have not finished their tournaments, but their Regional formats are different than 2A East (16 teams.

Re: Time to make adjustments.

VHSL Headquarters in Charlottesville should run all tournaments, and have same policy in force thru out entire state. Play all tournaments in centralized venues using common sense.

Just because team A is ranked .0000001 % point ahead of Team B, should not mean Team B should drive 4 hours to play. Play game half way between the 2 schools.

Tournament Director

I wish VHSL would hire me as Tournament Director for VHSL and give me power to select all venues.

Re: Time to make adjustments.

Well whats even crazier now is that Bruton and Amelia are not playing until Friday at the earliest. BUT, no one can play a quarterfinal game until Sunday. No one is allowed to play Saturday. Well, I can guarantee that some superintendents are not opening their school or letting their students travel on a Sunday so I'm betting some will play Sunday and some will play on Monday. Its starting to get ridiculous.

Districts are soon to be a thing of the past. no reason to play district games when you are now in a conference. Every one should play their conference teams then fill the remaining schedule with non conference teams. Time to move on with the change and forget about dirstricts. The times are changing.
