How is Courtland Cougar's doing this year ?

There has been a lot of talk about them here, just click the magnifying glass at the top and search the word Courtland. But in a nutshell, they're very young and inexperienced as a team. Only return 4 starters overall. Their QB (whom shauntclair called one of the worst Courtland QBs in recent memory, LOL) transferred and starts at Riverbend.

Cougars are rebuilding this year with many young players. Defense has been pretty good but offense has been non existent. As for the QB Chet Wilborne did transfer to Riverbend and that was a loss that is killing the cougars. Shauntclair is probably correct about Wilborne but I wouldn't call him the worse QB in Courtland history! I would call him the less talented QB in their history as he lead them to the playoffs the past two years and also a battlefield dist. championship! he also played in the state semi game last year with a injured back wearing a back brace and a cracked vertebrae! so I would give the kid credit and not knock his ability as the worst Courtland QB! He probably should have not played but give him credit for playing!

Wilborne looked really good against Courtland, I went to that game. Wilborne is allowed to show his arm more for Riverbend, and he is pretty accurate. The problem is his receivers dropped most of his best passes. He can also run and is quicker than one may think.

People seem to forget about Eric Washington. He was a much worse QB than Wilborne is.

Actually, Eric Washington had the best arm (other than Ryan McBroom) for the Cougars in the last 15 years. I sat between two NOVA HCs and a College Coach during the Briar Woods/Courtland game. They were all shocked to learn Washington did not have offers in that he had the best arm they had seen all year. That's not my opinion. It was their's.

It must be remembered that the Courtland QB is a manager. Run the plays. Don't fumble. It's always puzzled me that a former QB (Hall) seems to have an aversion to the pass but I'm not qualified enough to even ask the question. Chet's a good QB. Solid for many teams and the Bears will let him throw. He'll do well. But as far as Cougar QBs go in the last 15 years, he has the least talent. Doesn't make him bad. Just means the Cougars had quite a few Porsches in the garage over the years. But they use them to go grocery shopping.

Courtland starts the year with a very tough schedule. They always have. Ponax and the Benders is no easy task. Louisa has the best team they have had in a decade. On this basis, the Cougars are right where the majority of 4As would be right now. 0 - 3.

No, it's not been pretty. And they still have to play Chancellor and JM. + it looks like KG is pretty good. It's tough for me to get my head wrapped around a year where Courtland rebuilds but it looks like that may be where we are.

GL to your Lions. Pound the rock.

I wonder if this is the year Courtland brings JV players up significantly or just lets the season ride, because they have no depth whatsoever. Louisa's JV beat them 22-6, and I was not at that game, so I don't know how talented they are or if the cupboard is getting bare for the foreseeable future. They may have to keep relying on transfers.

JV players may come up. Freshmen, never. Not as long as JC Hall is the Coach.

Very tough start for the year. History says they will surprise. But even I have to admit, it doesn't look good.

All 3 sophomore running backs played as freshman last year! sorry Shaunti but it is true. Also the JV is in good shape, most of the sophs are up on the varsity, so lots of 9th graders playing. Just a very young group all the way around. last year Ct JV beat Louisa 44-6! This is by far the youngest group of kids to be playing both Varsity and JV since the school opened in 1980. They have found themselves a new Varsity QB, so the previous starter can now move to receiver where he can be better utilized with his height and speed.

On the roster already and is a Junior, he played late in the game the other night. He was the back up to the back up, who got a chance and was pleasantly surprising, even if it was the 4th quarter and you guys were subbing frequently:) good luck against KG,week schedule to date for them, and caught Liberty with a couple major injuries, so still not sure who they are?

Thanks. I was busy chatting and barely watching the game by that point. What's his name or number? #3?

You have to explain, this one to me. Courtland had what may have been the three best running backs in the State last year. Yet you say there were three Freshman that played Varsity at RB. That contradicts everything In Cougar history under JC Hall.

But you shoot the cannon every week. You see them every week now. I don't and I believe you.

But the Cougars play no weanie schedule. They are right where everyone should have expected.

Yes, it is true that 2 Freshman played varsity last year and the 3rd played as a Freshman at Spotsy. You are correct about the 3 best running backs in the state possibly, but when most of Courtlands games got out of hand last year, these Freshman got lots of playing time in back up duty or garbage time. They actually had several carries in the playoff run last season. They are set at that position for the next few years, and last night Kam-Ron got 166 yards on like 12 carries, DJ had a bunch and the sims kid had an equal amount as they racked up 311 yards rushing. The O-line has just been pitiful, but that might be from just playing superior teams, who are bigger, faster, and older. Its funny how football seasons go, because last year take Louisa who had a bunch of Sophs, but very talented ones, jump ahead a year where most everyone else lost a little something and you have them at 3-0. Courtland is thin this year, and has problems against smash mouth football teams, They are much better suited for a spread team who likes to wing it around and run side to side. Louisa was to big and stronger then our boys this year. If the offense was moving the ball better and gave the defense a break they would have been in that game to the end. Last night they finally got to play someone their own size, but was 2-1. Cougars played great especially on offense, and the Defense only gave up 12 points, the other 6 came on a nifty fake punt. It was nice to hear the cannon last night, it had been silent for the past 3 weeks. 3-7 is a sure outcome, but would not rule out 4-6 or 5-5 finish. The new QB has been a great find, much better at getting plays off and just overall command of the offense. Thing is they will get better each week, its just that except for Spotsy and Caroline, everyone else is better this year, so on to Liberty.

2 freshmen played varsity for Courtland? I'm not there. I believe you. But it does contradict every JCHall map for over a decade. but I still believe you.

Now that I have been sufficiently surprised by this info, don't be surprised when them Cougars make the playoffs and beat a team they shouldn't. I realize that's optimistic but I base it on history alone. These guys just don't go away and get better every week. But even I have to admit, we're stretching it this year.
