Does anybody know or know where I can find how many teams are making play-offs for each Region? I've found VHSL documents that state 8 from each region unless the region decides on less. Thank you in advance.

Region 4D goes back and forth between 6 and 8 teams. I don't know what they have decided for this yr.

It's ultimately up to the AD's and Principals of each region. I haven't head anything for this year.

Your research is correct. The VHSL only requires that each Region furnish a champion to represent that Region in the State semi-championship game. How each Region arrives at that champion is 100% the decision of each Region’s governing representatives.

Thankfully, most adhere to the 8 team format. On several occasions, Regions have adopted other formats. Class 4C had a format that guaranteed a playoff position or two, based on District standing. I guess they felt it was fair, but I though it to be mostly political.

Personally, I enjoyed the 16 team Regional format. Admittedly, it resulted in a few mercy killings in the first round, but occasionally, a major upset occurred. I believe Waynesboro was the first 15 seed to advance? (Ask UVA if a 16 seed can beat a #1!)

Waynesboro was actually the 16 seed, beat the 1 seed by 31, then won the next week by 27, and then lost by 5. From recollection, they actually could have won that game.

Do you recall who they played in those three games?

That was very rare. Could happen again in a yr like this due to Covid. Most yrs any team that's a true state contender win the first game by 35+

Hidden Valley 1 seed
Broadway
Western Albemarle

Amazingly enough, they had actually played the latter 2 in Regular season and lost to both.

Now I will admit that my mind isn't that good, I did look it up earlier haha
It was in 2014
