For what it's worth, HSHS just beat O C Smith and Great Bridge like a hot knife through butter.

Varsity is still undefeated for the season and I think have had only one close game.

I know this is just 7 on 7, and I agree, it doesn't really prove very much. But, I'm here to tell you, they have a team that will be undefeated and highly nationally ranked. The only opponent they face that can stop them is themselves.

Fun day watching some 7v7 competition! During Preliminary play, HS finished undefeated, Oscar Smith was 5-1 (4-1 maybe, not sure) They lost to HS 27-6 in the opening round.
Playoffs: #1 HSHS faced #2 Oscar Smith in the Championship game. This was a whale of a game!!! A shoot out!! They traded scores back and forth till close to the end. Score tied 20-20! HS drives down and scores!! Score 27-20 HS... It looked as though HS had intercepted an OS pass that would've made it 30-20 was reversed. Smith ball.. score 27-20, Smith drive the ball to the 5 yard line and on 4th and goal, Springer defender knocked the pass down to the ground ending Smith's comeback attempt. As it would be, time ran out and that was the end of the game!! Springers win 27-20!!
Go Springers. HS stays undefeated through all 7v7 play thus far!! Oscar Smith finished with 2 losses today, both to HSHS. Springers' passing game is very strong!

I think this is it until after Team camp is completed then on to the Powerade 7v7 Tournament in Charlotte NC end of July! Then on to team practice, scrimmages and finally THE REGULAR SEASON!

I think you guys need to take another look again at Henrico. Jalon Jones returning to QB is a game changer. He dominated a tougher schedule at St frances against other power houses. Henrico has a few other stud recievers with Eric McDaniels at RB with a couple power 5 offers plus JaHad Carter the VA tech commit at wideout. I agree that HSHS & Manchester have the most talent but now Henrico has the best QB in the Richmond area and maybe the state. He is ranked number 4 nationally. The richmond area 5a race just got interesting in my book. Dual threat too. Go watch his huddle before we give the trophy away all ready. I guess @DinwiddieProud and @BleedingNavy can give us the low down after their scrimmage with Henrico and Bird?

Ok... what does Henrico's Lines look like?
How about Henrico's defense? I'm glad Jalon is back ! It will be fun!
Remember though D'Vonte Waller is an outstanding qb and he has tons of targets!
Springer Offensive line will be very good and big. HS's backfield is 2nd to none in RVA maybe the State. HS will have a strong defense too. Just saying.....We want tough opponents! We got one of the best in the state today! Oscar Smith, we took them down not once, but twice!

Come on now Springs... Just bc I don't think we should give the trophy away just yet doesn't mean I don't think your loaded.

Speaking off which... lots of athletes over there. Sometimes less is more. Are their enough footballs to go around over there?

Regarding Henrico's line I think they will be better than most. And I think their QB makes up for a lot and can hide any holes they may have. I don't think they have any glaring holes though. I expect they will be in the thick of things.

Springs is still the favorite and deserves to be.

I think what Jalon did at St Francis was great. But.... it was the rest of his team and him that went 13-0. That St. Francis team is extremely well coached too! It's going to be a whole different ball game at Henrico. There's no way the rest of that team is going to be that good and their staff is ok, but they are not at the level of St. Francis or HSHS.

Just ribbing you a bit mbonape. I'm excited to see Henrico. They always play HS strong! This year will be no different..... Honestly, I think our QB is being overlooked! He did throw for nearly 3,000 yards last year. This year, he has grown. He's taller and he has developed his physique too. The kid's got a cannon and can run.

I'm leaning toward Mbonape on this one lol. I admit I don't follow HSHS too closely, while I am more familiar with SFA and Coach Poggi, but I believe on paper this might be one of the best regular season games in Virginia. I may have to make the trip to Richmond for this one, as long as it doesn't conflict with one of St John's loaded home games lol. Btw if you're in the dc area, st johns might have the best team in the mid Atlantic and plays a schedule that might be more impressive than IMG's.

For what it's worth, year before last, at the scrimmage, Henrico was in total disarray. They were totally unprepared. Multiple coaches barking conflicting commands, coaches arguing, etc. The play on the field reflected this. Last year, They looked 1000% better. Dinwiddie, Bird, and Henrico all played solid ball against each other. I wouldn't go so far as to say any of these teams were at mid-season form, but they came ready to play.

The organization and discipline Henrico showed was so much improved that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Henrico has had the reputation for being disorganized, even poorly coached, for several years. If last season was any indication, they have cleaned that up.

CavsGrad, I am a Springer, so I am a bit biased, but I am open minded and I do pay pretty close attention to what's happening in the Richmond area. I do believe that Henrico is going to be good this year. Along with Varina, Deep Run should be decent along with Patrick Henry, Hermitage and Bird. Class 5 in RVA should be competitive this year!!!! This is a good thing!! Highland Springs (in the past 3 seasons has been crowned "King on the Hill") has won 3 straight Class 5 State Titles registering 14-1 records all 3 years. All 3 loses were decided by 1 play at the end of each game. Last year, they were not expected to repeat as State champs due to attrition! Graduation hit the Springers hard. Last year's team was loaded with Sophomores and Juniors.
We lost 3 starters from last year's Starting Offense and Defense! Basically, they are all back! What has come up and come in, makes them very strong in every position on the field (offense and defense). They will be, with reason, the heavy favorite to repeat 4th in a row. Barring mass injury or defeating our selves, it very well could happen.... They DO in fact have to play the season first and earn it's way there first before any trophies are given out!
With that said, Highland Springs has had fantastic teams for a long long time (back to the 1970's). This years squad "could be" the best of the best from the school! That is saying a lot! That said, they haven't done it yet!!!! But the potential is there. I can tell you that the Coaching staff is working hard (as are the kids) and they are trying not to get caught up in all of this hype. They are humble and will not trash talk! They want to go up against the best competition and efforts everybody out there has! That only makes both sides (opposing teams) better. This is going to be a fun season. Win or lose!

I can attest to this DP. Me and @springer76 attended the Varina/Henrico game last year and sat right behind the Henrico coaching staff. Total disarray and confusion. If they get it together, Henrico could very well bring a football state championship back to Azelea AVE this year!

Yes we did sit there together DSH! I remember those of us sitting there were scratching our heads at times saying "WHY?" Henrico came to HSHS's house last year. They started with stabbing that spear in the middle of our field and nothing but smack talk for most of the game.... They wound up going home beaten and battered to the tune of 23-6 HS win. Then again in the playoffs... Henrico running their mouths on our field again and went home for good to the tune of 28-14 ... and Lawrence Chambers Hen. QB was crowned best QB in Richmond and I think he was on the All State team somewhere. Their passing game was very good, but it wasn't enough to whip HS. I just checked, he was 2nd team QB All-State.

I have no doubts HSHS is the favorite to make the 4 peat and I would like to see them make history! I was there when they got the first. But after watching the old phoebus vs stone bridge wars, I never count out Stone bridge led by a Coach Mickey Thompson.

I'd never count our Stone Bridge either. Tuscarora has a lot coming back, but who is their new coach? Broad Run can make some noise up there too.

Stone bridge’s offensive scheme is incredible to watch when it’s clicking on all cylinders.
It is, but they have to have a good passing game to go with that single wing or they get figured out quickly by a good defensive team! Teams with good outside speed can stop it. HS has done it. Coach Johnson was at Stonewall Jackson Manassas before HS and he played them every year and knows Mickey's routine well!

How in the world did HSHS get 4 consecutive deep TD passes against O. Smith during that final 7vs7 game? I wasn't able to be there so, should they be worried that a major weakness exposed?

Our booster club didn't seem too worried due to the players which weren't available to play for O. Smith... Who knows but I know I don't like that kind of excuse.... Next player up even if it's just summer ball, right?

I'm telling you HSHS has speed to burn. When you can get wide open. You score easily!. Did they mention, toward the end HS was up 27-20. OS was on the 3 or 4 yd line ready to score and possibly tie the game for overtime, HS stopped them by knocking down the pass in the end zone on 4th down that preserved the win.

OS Did beat our jv squad 29-7 in semifinals. Then got the HS varsity in Finals.

HSHS deserves the National recognition of a Season opener on ESPN!! Those games are so very exciting.. The extra lighting that's required for their broadcast really adds to the experience. What a season opener it would be to feature the Springers Vs Tigers & Westfield vs Salem or Stone Bridge??!! Those games should be in Richmond too..

That would be an awesome thing there! I do believe that Coach Johnson and his staff would jump at an opportunity like that!

I have heard some rumblings of "out of" district games in HSHS's next cycle of a top tier team .... Could there be a matchup of HS and Ocean Lakes as a season opener maybe next year? Who knows? Could be!

Ocean Lakes is pretty good but the talent has seemed to have shifted over to the South Eastern District. But, if HS come down here I'll watch the game.

I think he's talked to them and they were the only ones out of OS, Westfield and Salem and Ocean Lakes that said they would. Nobody else showed interest.... is what I heard. So, with that said, who knows!

Before we had Hermitage scheduled, we played Colonial Forge, Woodbridge and Dinwiddie. Each for 2 year cycles. All opening game 1 kickoffs. I'd like see them maybe pick up Manchester, Thomas Dale or Bird as a future game 1 opponent too!
But..... who knows? Right!

Just the concept of getting the Top Tier teams in each Class to play as season openers would be really good exposure for VA HS Football and I'd think ESPN would be interested in covering some of those games.

I'd love to see this too, but espn would probably be concerned with the viewership. In recent years, Smith and Bishop Sullivan seem to be the only VA schools that have been consistently noticed on a national level. Without having a top 5 rated player, I think the quickest way to getting on espn is playing and upsetting nationally recognized teams. That being said, I was happy to see Westfield crack a preseason top 100 this week, with HSHS, Smith, Bishop Sullivan, and maybe Salem getting honorable mention.
